Wrestling governing body announces new format for 2024 Paris Olympics Qualifiers

India has so far earned one quota for Paris.

United World Wrestling on Monday (November 13) announced a new format 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers pertaining to continental and world qualifiers. All five qualifiers next year will have four seeds in each of the weight classes and no gold-medal bouts.

Earlier, a gold medal bout would be conducted exclusively to declare the winner. However, this time the semifinal bouts will serve as the Paris Olympic qualification bouts in all the continental qualifiers. And unlike the previous editions no repechage and bronze medal bouts will be held. Winners of each semifinals will earn their respective NOC a quota.

Meanwhile, for the World Qualifiers, winners of semifinals bout will earn quotas and there will be an exclusive bronze medal match among the losing semifinalists and the winner here receives the third quota on offer.

A total of 144 spots are up for grabs in the four continental competitions and an extra 54 spots will be awarded during the Olympic qualifiers. Antim Panghal remains the only Indian wrestler to have secured a quota at the World Wrestling Championships held earlier this year. Several athletes secured qualification in respective weight categories in the first Olympic qualifying tournament for Paris Olympics – World Wrestling Championships 2023.

The continental qualifiers starts with Pan-America followed by Africa and Oceania combined. In wrestling, Africa and Oceania have combined qualification tournament. The final qualifying tournament will be held in Istanbul, Turkey and the country that has not attained a quota in any particular weight category can compete in the competition.

February 21-08 March: Pan-American Qualifiers, Acapulco
March 22-24: African & Oceania Qualifiers, Alexandria
April 04-07: European Qualifiers, Baku
April 19-21: Asian Qualifiers, Bishkek
May 09-12: World Olympic Qualifier, Istanbul
