Bret Hart’s top seven best matches in WWE history

Bret Hart is widely and unanimously considered one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. “The Hitman” was WWE’s top star during arguably the toughest period in company history, carrying the company alongside Shawn Michaels during the infamous steroid scandal in the mid-1990s. There’s a reason why he’s called “The Best There Is, The Best There Was, and The Best There Ever Will Be.”
One of the biggest things that was appreciated about Bret is how much he sold physical agony in the ring and how he could realistically come back to still win the match when he was the top guy. It’s truly masterful work.
He didn’t just hulk back up like Hogan or Cena; he clawed, scratched, and ached his way to most of his victories and did it in a very convincing fashion.
With a plethora of classic feuds, mastery of technical wrestling, selflessness in the ring, brilliant psychology, and an iconic look and theme, he was the definition of greatness. Let’s take a look at the top seven matches in the illustrious career of Bret “The Hitman” Hart.
Bret Hart vs Mr. Perfect: 1993 King of the Ring Semifinal
Mr. Perfect and Bret Hart had incredible chemistry together, and whenever the two got into a ring, it was always a memorable bout.
On his way to winning King of the Ring, Bret faced three different opponents—Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect, and Bam Bam Bigelow.
While all the matches were fantastic, the best was his semifinal clash against Perfect. This match is a technical classic with several submission encounters between the two and is still considered one of the greatest matches in the history of King of the Ring.
Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin: Survivor Series 1996
This match will always be overshadowed by their eventual WrestleMania 13 showdown, but that can never take away from how underrated and awesome this bout was.
Without the successful reception of this match by the fans, we might have never gotten the WrestleMania 13 match.
This encounter resulted from Stone Cold constantly calling out Bret Hart for months. When they finally faced off, they tore the house down, creating what many fans would call the greatest match in Survivor Series history.
Bret Hart vs The British Bulldog: SummerSlam 1992
Bret Hart and his brother-in-law, The British Bulldog, faced off for the Intercontinental Championship at SummerSlam 1992.
This match stemmed from their rivalry, cleverly using the real-life fact that the British Bulldog had recently married Hart’s sister, Diana.
Bret was the heel in this feud and dropped his championship to The British Bulldog during the match. Their performance was an absolute banger and elevated The British Bulldog’s career, allowing him to earn the appreciation he deserved from the fans and WWE.
Bret Hart vs Owen Hart: WrestleMania X
It was not just The British Bulldog whose career got elevated after a phenomenal match with Bret Hart; the same fate befell Owen Hart after he wrestled his brother in the opening match of WrestleMania X.
This match propelled Owen into the main event scene, a push many fans believed he had been deserving of for a long time.
The two brothers delivered an unbelievable showdown at the grandest stage, proving that their last name carries immense legacy and respect in the wrestling business.
Ironically, the match between the two submission specialists ended with a pinfall, with Owen leaving WrestleMania X as the victorious Hart.
Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels: WrestleMania XII
When discussing the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, two names stand out: Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels.
When they finally faced off at WrestleMania 12 in an Iron Man Match, many thought the concept might not work due to the exhausting nature of a 60-minute match.
However, with two of the greatest performers involved, they not only made it work but also created one of the best wrestling matches of all time in the process.
Even though Bret lost the WWE Championship to Shawn Michaels in this match, it remains memorable for the way the two of them sold their historic rivalry.
Bret Hart vs Owen Hart: SummerSlam 1994
Once again featuring the two siblings from the Hart family, this match rightfully deserves a spot on the list. The sibling rivalry between Bret and Owen is widely regarded as the best in WWE history.
The feud worked because anyone with a brother could relate to the story being told. The Hart brothers clashed over the WWE Championship inside a steel cage, creatively finding ways to escape the cage while preventing the other from doing so.
The match in itself was a hard-fought battle featuring superplexes and submission holds, ending with Bret leaving SummerSlam ’94 with the WWF Championship. This classic is considered one of the best steel cage matches in WWE history.
Bret Hart vs Stone Cold Steve Austin: WrestleMania XIII
Bret Hart was involved in many great matches throughout his career, but his encounter with Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13 is still considered by many as the greatest wrestling match of all time.
This match marked the birth of the Attitude Era, catapulting Stone Cold into superstardom while transforming Bret from a babyface to a heel, effectively executing a double turn.
The match ended with Stone Cold passing out to Bret Hart’s signature sharpshooter, leaving Austin unconscious and bloodied in the ring—a classic ending—Austin loses but in memorable courageous fashion and wins over the heart of the fans in the process. Brilliantly done and still remembered to this day for being the most perfectly executed Double Turn in WWE history.
