Triple H accused of using WWE: Unreal to paint himself as WWE’s Dana White

WWE: Unreal is now streaming live on Netflix!
Netflix’s WWE: Unreal was billed as a revealing behind-the-scenes look at the sports entertainment juggernaut.
But according to fresh reports, the docuseries may be less of a documentary and more of a curated PR piece, specifically designed to position Paul “Triple H” Levesque as WWE’s central mastermind, much like Dana White’s portrayal in UFC.
The claims come from Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer, who pulled no punches when breaking down what insiders are really saying about Unreal.
On the July 31 edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer alleged that the series was engineered with a singular purpose: to elevate Triple H as the face and brain behind WWE.
“The whole show is very clearly designed — someone who was very involved said the idea was they were trying to present Levesque… it’s a vehicle for Levesque.
They were trying to present Levesque as Dana White, with the idea that the star, the mastermind, is Levesque, and the wrestlers are the wrestlers — they come and go, they’re pieces.”
Triple H showed as brand of WWE
Meltzer said that while stars like Cody Rhodes and Rhea Ripley were portrayed positively, they were positioned as secondary figures in a larger narrative.
“I felt watching it… they minimized the wrestlers. Ripley, Cody Rhodes — they came off as very nice people, well spoken, but it was very much portrayed that they were the pawns and Paul Levesque was the manipulator.”
This framing has sparked criticism from viewers and insiders alike. Rather than showcasing the full creative ecosystem of WWE, including collaboration, conflict, and the evolution of ideas, the show appears to reshape recent history through a filtered lens.
Perhaps most concerning is what Unreal chose not to include. The series glossed over backstage controversies, like The Rock’s reported influence over creative decisions leading into WrestleMania 40. It also presented several booking decisions as the work of long-standing WWE producers Bruce Prichard and Ed Koskey, something Meltzer disputes.
“They kind of made the whole scenario up… they were rewriting how it went down. They made it look like it was their decision, when it wasn’t.”
By omitting tension and conflict, and selectively rewriting key events, Unreal may have done more to obscure reality than reveal it. Viewers tuning in for transparency got instead a polished product seemingly aimed at positioning Triple H as the beating heart of modern-day WWE.

Fans are not particularly happy with WWE: Unreal
The timing of the docuseries also raises eyebrows, as WWE navigates its new corporate structure under TKO Group Holdings. Many see Unreal as a calculated move to anoint Triple H as the heir to Vince McMahon’s legacy, both creatively and as the public face of WWE leadership.
While some fans appreciated the clean visuals and star-driven moments, others couldn’t help but notice the overly polished storytelling and how it veered closer to narrative control than journalistic honesty.
Ultimately, Unreal may say more about WWE’s branding strategy than its actual backstage operations. And that’s what has many fans talking.
Was WWE: Unreal really about Triple H?
According to Dave Meltzer, yes. He stated that the series was created “as a vehicle for Levesque,” painting him as the central mastermind, much like Dana White in UFC.
Did Unreal accurately portray WWE’s creative team?
Not exactly. Meltzer claimed, “They kind of made the whole scenario up,” assigning booking decisions to Bruce Prichard and Ed Koskey that weren’t theirs.
Were the wrestlers downplayed in WWE Unreal?
Meltzer believes so. “Ripley, Cody Rhodes… came off as well-spoken, but it was very much portrayed that they were the pawns and Triple H was the manipulator,” he said.
