Asuka pins Rhea Ripley, Becky Lynch taps out again & more!

The December 22 episode of Monday Night Raw emanated from the Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The promotion had announced multiple matches and segments for the show featuring some of the top stars.

‘The Man’ Becky Lynch made her return for the first time since Survivor Series, while Austin Theory teamed up with Bronson Reed to take on the team of CM Punk and Bronson Reed. The show featured a mix of storyline advancement, surprise attacks, and notable in-ring results that set up several developing angles on WWE television.

Get to know what happened this Monday, as we have the complete summary, highlights, results, and winners’ list for the 12/22 episode of WWE Raw.

In the first match of the show, Rhea Ripley and Asuka competed in singles action, following last week’s chaos where The Kabuki Warriors attacked Ripley and Iyo Sky. Before the match, Rhea asked an injured Iyo to stay backstage while she dealt with Asuka.

Rhea kicked off the match with aggression, dismantling Asuka. However, an interference from Kairi Sane allowed Asuka to take over. Sane continued to help Asuka, getting involved multiple times, until Iyo Sky came out. However, Sane sent her crashing back-first on the apron, and as Rhea went to check on Iyo, Asuka rolled her up for the pinfall victory.

Winner: Asuka

Grade: B

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • During the walk-ins, Paul Heyman, Bron Breakker, and Bronson Reed ran into Austin Theory as Heyman stepped away to speak with Austin Theory, questioning what he thought he was doing. Theory explained that he wanted people to notice his actions before they ever noticed his face. Theory said that was who he was now, someone who didn’t wait, but took. He added that he wanted to seize the opportunity and help out the Vision in the main event tonight
  • Backstage, Bron Breakker and Bronson Reed tried to wrap their head around the idea of Austin Theory trying to align with them. Heyman reminded them of where each of them had been a year earlier compared to now, and said he saw potential in Theory. He then announced that it would be Bronson Reed and Austin Theory vs CM Punk and Rey Mysterio, and that Theory would either fulfill his vision or be driven out of WWE. Breakker made it clear to Reed that his loyalty was with him, not Theory.

Becky Lynch returns & taps out again

Becky Lynch made her return during the segment where Maxxine Dupri was supposed to appear. Lynch stated that it won’t be a celebration for Maxxine and started to complain about the title loss, berating GM Adam Pearce, the referee, and the fans in Grand Rapids, too.

Maxxine entered the fray, reminding Lynch that a rookie beat the greatest of all time, and not just once, not twice, but three times. And if she wanted a rematch, she could have it any time, any place, but she wouldn’t stop at nothing to beat her.

Dupri added that Becky complaining about everything made her sound like someone who was afraid her best years were behind her, a comment that clearly struck a nerve as Becky landed a cheap shot and started battering Dupri. Becky flaunted the IC title, only for Dupri to pull her back down and apply the Ankle Lock, forcing Becky to tap out.

Grade: C

Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • It will be interesting to see who walks out with the title on January 5, as a loss for both women would be difficult for both to build back their momentum.
  • Dupri had a respectable showing on the microphone, and Lynch put her over once again by tapping out to the Ankle Lock.
  • Backstage, GM Adam Pearce wished Je’Von Evans luck in his match against Rayo Americano and told him he wanted to meet with him afterward to discuss his future. Stephanie Vaquer then appeared, prompting Pearce to ask how she wanted to handle the situation involving Nikki Bella and Raquel Rodriguez. Vaquer said to give her both of them. After Vaquer’s response, the GM made it official by booking a triple threat match for next week.

Je’Von Evans vs Rayo Americano

Following the backstage interaction last week, Rayo Americano from Los Americanos, accompanied by El Grande Americano and Bravo Americano, battled NXT’s Je’Von Eans.

Bravo and El Grande helped out Rayo during the match, but it wasn’t enough to pin the Young OG, who delivered the OG Cutter to pin Rayo. After the match, El Grande Americano and Bravo tried to jump Evans, but the Young OG wisely escaped.

Winner: Je’Von Evans

Grade: C

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • During Evan’s walkout, Michael Cole noted that the Young OG is a free agent looking to impress Raw and SmackDown to get a main roster promotion.
  • Backstage, Cathy Kelley interviewed AJ Styles and Dragon Lee. They said they had already defeated Judgment Day, the War Raiders, and the New Day, and regardless of what happened next week against the Usos, it was going to be a classic, and they would bring the fire. They added that as long as they held the titles, they were better than the best, and that was exactly what the Usos would be getting next week.
  • Bron Breakker delivered a promo claiming that he was going to defeat CM Punk for the World Title. He insulted Punk as a self-centered piece of trash, and once again challenged him to bring out the 2011 “Best in the World” version of CM Punk. He went on to say he hoped Punk had saved his money and cashed all his checks, because after January 5, he wouldn’t be worth a dime to anyone.
  • Nikki Bella interrupted the broadcast, saying she was there to remind everyone exactly who she was. She mocked the crowd and then acknowledged that Stephanie Vaquer was a big deal in the ring. However, she was a big deal everywhere, insisting the title should belong to a true global superstar like herself.

Bayley vs Roxanne Perez

Bayley kicked off the action with a Belly-to-Belly as Roxanne Perez managed to kick out two, and Liv Morgan yelled out at Bayley to calm down. Roxanne slowly built herself back in the match, and when Bayley mounted a comeback, she witnessed Raquel Rodriguez appear ringside, and Perez now has two faction members ringside.

Rodriguez tried to step on the apron, but Lyra Valkyria took her out, and Morgan sent Lyra bouncing over the announce desk. After failing to pin Perez, Morgan distracted the official, while Perez removed the padding on the turnbuckle, sending Bayley face-first into it.

Perez went for the pin, but Rodriguez stepped on the apron on the other side, distracting the official as Morgan pulled her down from the apron, and the three women started arguing. Valkyria takes out both Morgan and Raquel and slaps Bayley back into the match as the Role Model delivered the flying elbow from the top rope to pick up the win.

Winner: Bayley

Grade: B+

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • The rift between Liv and Raquel is being unravelled in a great way, and WWE should not mess it up again by dragging it out for too long or shelving it.
  • Backstage, Austin Theory approached Bronson Reed. Reed told him that he was now rolling with the Vision, so Theory just needed to follow his lead and everything would be fine. Theory shot back that Reed wasn’t his kid and that he would be starting the match, with Reed following his lead instead.

CM Punk confronts Gunther

Gunther made his appearance to a chorus of boos once again, and he basked in all the heat with a smile. The Ring General stated that the fans should not be mad at him, but at the guy who tapped out like a little b*tch.

CM Punk’s music then hits as he gets right into Gunther’s face, clearly not happy with the Ring General disrespecting John Cena. Gunther continued to laugh before backing off and further irritating Punk with the ‘You Can’t See Me’ taunt. Rey Mysterio made the walk as Gunther was on his way backstage. Mysterio had some words for Gunther, who only laughed before leaving.

Grade: A

Backstage Moments:

  • After the segment, Gunther was walking backstage, laughing, when he ran into AJ Styles. Styles asked if he didn’t know how to be quiet, and Gunther replied that he guessed he didn’t, laughed, and walked away.

CM Punk & Rey Mysterio vs Bronson Reed & Austin Theory

In the main event of the show, World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk teamed up with Rey Mysterio to take on the Vision’s Bron Breakker and Austin Theory, who returned in action for the first time in almost a year. Theory and Mysterio kicked off the action in the main event.

The action continued until Theory tripped Mysterio from the top rope and followed it up with a Stomp to pin Mysterio and pick up a win in his in-ring return. Punk chased off Theory after the match, as Bron Breakker came in to attack Punk.

Punk sent Theory over the top rope, but Breakker capitalized, delivering a vicious spear to faltline the Champion, ahead of their title clash at the January 5 episode of Raw.

Winner: Bronson Reed & Austin Theory

Grade: B

Match Insights & Backstage Moments:

  • This was Theory’s first win on Raw in over a year and his first time teaming up with Bronson Reed.
  • Backstage before the main event, Dominik Mysterio and Finn Balor were hanging out in the Judgment Day clubhouse when Raquel, Roxanne, and Liv came in, arguing. Perez complained to Rodriguez about costing her the match, while Raquel insisted she had only been trying to help, something Perez and Liv should have done during her title match last week. Liv explained that they were following Raquel’s instructions but defended her, saying she had only been trying to help. The argument continued until Rodriguez stormed off to prepare for her title match the following week.
