Zverev is a two-time Madrid Open champion and also finished runners-up in 2023.

Alexander Zverev booked a spot in the fourth round of Madrid Open 2024 with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Denis Shapovalov. Zverev extended his lead over Shapovalov to 6-3 on Sunday in the Manolo Santana Stadium. With victory over the Canadian in Madrid, Zverev is 5-0 against left-handers this season.

Shapovalov kept pace with Zverev all through the one-hour, 44-minute match until the German broke Shapovalov’s serve in the seventh game of the first set. Zverev also broke the Shapovalov serve twice in the first and eleventh games of the second set while surrendering a break of serve in the tenth game. It was the sole breakpoint faced by the German as he advanced to the last 16 in Madrid for the seventh consecutive time.

Francisco Cerundolo’s 6-7(7), 6-4, 6-2 win against World No. 16 Tommy Paul in the third round marked the Argentine’s first top-20 win of the season. Cerundolo, who is in his maiden fourth-round appearance at Madrid will play Zverev next. Cerundolo leads Paul 3-2 in their head-to-head, with all five matches requiring a deciding set.

Francisco Cerundolo vs Alexander Zverev preview

Alexander Zverev and Francisco Cerundolo have each won four of their last five matches. The duo turned in convincing performances in their third-round matches, hitting over thirty winners each.

As the tournament nears its business end, either Zverev or Cerundolo will play big-serving Hubert Hurkacz or top-ranked American Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals.

Cerundolo will have his task cut out when he goes up against fourth seed Zverev in the round of 16. Zverev is 22-8 this year, while Cerundolo is at 9-12. The German further maintains an edge in Madrid at 23-4, while Cernudolo follows at a distant 2-1.

Alexander Zverev has the privilege of being a two-time champion in Madrid, something Cerundolo’s resume lacks.

Prediction

While Zverev and Cerundolo benefitted from first-round byes, the latter had to face a second-set tiebreaker in his second-round match before pulling off a maiden career win against Hungarian Fabian Marozsan. Cerundolo was again stretched by Tommy Paul to three sets in the next round.

Zverev on the other hand, wrapped up both his matches in two sets, and the time on the clock did not exceed two hours on either occasion. Cerundolo, in contrast, spent nearly 2 hours, and 30 minutes playing Taylor Fritz on Sunday.

Both players exited from the season-opening ATP Masters 1000 at Monte Carlos earlier than they would have liked. Zverev lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round, and Cerundolo bowed out to Karen Khachanov in the second round.

Zverev will also be mindful of the fact that he has three semi-final appearances this year at Melbourne, Los Cobos and Miami, having failed to convert them into something more meaningful.

While Cerundolo (8) might have won more clay court matches than Zverev (4) so far in 2024, Zverev is the more experienced hand with seven clay court titles to Cerundolo’s one.

Result: Alexander Zverev to win in straight sets.
