India won 106 medals in the last Games

India is heading into the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, with one of its most closely watched contingents in years. The Games will run from September 19 to October 4, with India sending a 503-member athlete contingent comprising 269 men and 234 women. That number is actually smaller than the 655-strong squad India took to Hangzhou back in 2023.

At Hangzhou, India walked away with a record 107 medals, including 28 gold, 38 silver, and 41 bronze, which was enough to finish fourth on the overall medal table behind China, Japan, and South Korea.

The tally crossed the 100-medal mark for the first time in the country’s Asian Games history in 2022, and most of that success came from athletics, shooting, archery, boxing, wrestling, and the various team sports.

This year India’s competitive campaign actually gets going before the opening ceremony, with teqball on September 17 and the women’s cricket team beginning their title defence against Japan a day later.

The men’s cricket side, also defending champions, enter later and go straight into the quarter-finals on September 28 under Shreyas Iyer.

Several familiar names carry medal hopes into these Games. PV Sindhu in badminton, Manu Bhaker in shooting, Lovlina Borgohain in boxing, Aman Sehrawat in wrestling and Mirabai Chanu in weightlifting are all former Olympic medallists back representing the country.

Neeraj Chopra, unfortunately, has had to withdraw because of an ankle injury, which is a blow given his profile, but the rest of the athletics and shooting squads still look strong on paper.
