Asian Games 2026: Updated medal tally after Day 9, September 28
Uzbekistan’s rapid rise in the gold medal count makes India’s hopes of repeating its fourth-place finish at the 2022 Games unlikely
India clinched eight medals on Day 9 of the Asian Games 2026, taking its total count closer to the 50-medal mark. However, gold continued to remain elusive as medals only came in silver and bronze—four each.
Athletics gave India the bulk of its medals on Day 9. Murali Sreeshankar, one of the favourites for gold, had to settle for silver in the men’s long jump, with China taking gold.
Several jumpers got hurt because of a problem with the take-off line along with tough rainy conditions, and Murali couldn’t take his last two attempts.

The javelin brought a double podium. Yashvir Singh threw 85.72m for silver and Rohit Yadav added bronze with 84.35m. With Neeraj Chopra out injured, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage took gold.
Gulveer Singh ran 3:36.72 for silver in the men’s 1500m, while Parul Chaudhary won her second bronze of the Aichi-Nagoya Games.
Vithya Ramraj took bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles and became the fastest Indian ever in the event, beating a 42-year-old mark set by PT Usha.
Earlier in the day, Esha Singh won silver in the women’s 25m pistol after losing the fifth shoot-off in a blockbuster final. Pincky Balhara opened the day with bronze in the women’s 78kg Kurash.
Lovlina Borgohain, Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokhariya all won their boxing quarter-finals, which guarantees each of them a medal.
The men’s cricket team, meanwhile, reached the semi-finals on ranking after the quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned without a toss.

China’s Lin Shan and Long Yiping won gold and silver respectively in the women’s 1m springboard, with compatriot Wang Zongyuan finishing on top in the men’s event. China also earned gold in the mixed team free routine in artistic swimming, ahead of Japan and Kazakhstan.
Uzbekistan enjoyed an excellent day as Kamolidinova Pokizakhon won the women’s 78kg Kurash final, while Ziyodullaev Akxor finished on top in the men’s 81kg category.
In weightlifting, North Korea’s Ro Kwang Ryol won the men’s 85kg title, while Iran’s Alipour Ali claimed gold in the 95kg event.

China’s Feng Bin won the women’s discus, ahead of compatriot Jiang Zhichao and Thailand’s Insaeng Subenrat. China also defeated Malaysia to win the men’s MOBA final (esports).
China dominated the 4x100m relay team events, with both their men and women teams clinching gold. Qatar’s Hemeida Bassem won the men’s 400m hurdles, while Japan’s Miura Ryuji prevailed on home soil in the men’s 3000m steeplechase.
Although India won plenty of medals today, none of those came in gold. As a result of this, the country remains in #12 position, with the chances of finishing in the top-5 becoming slimmer with every passing day. The contest remains tight from No. 5 to 10, as only 3 gold medals separate those nations.
