This will be Shubman Gill’s second series as a captain of Indian Cricket Team.

Indian Cricket Team test captain Shubman Gill fielded questions from reporters ahead of the first test of the two-match series against the West Indies. The first test will begin on October 2 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

This two-test series will resume India’s ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 journey after their 2-2 series draw in England. The Indian team is set to play the West Indies in two tests, with the second test to be played from October 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

After this, India will welcome South Africa for two tests, three ODIs, and five T20I matches. South Africa is the current ICC WTC champions and will be eager to win a test series in India. Meanwhile, the focus is on the first test against the West Indies.

Indian captain Shubman Gill fielded questions from the reporters, and one of the questions was about the availability of Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah, who has been on a workload management path, played only three tests in the five-test series in England. This was pre-decided, as Bumrah had suffered a back injury recurrence during the Sydney test earlier this year.

This led to the pacer missing three months of cricket, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and part of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Therefore, the NCA medical staff urged the Indian team management to manage his workload, and hence, he played three tests against England.

Many expected Bumrah to be rested for the West Indies series, as he played in the Asia Cup 2025 final that ended just two days before the first test. But he made himself available for the series and was included in the Indian squad.

Talking about Bumrah, Shubman Gill said that nothing was pre-decided when it came to his workload management. “We will assess on a match-to-match basis—how many days the Test lasts, how our fast bowlers feel,” Gill said, as per RevSportz.

Furthermore, Shubman Gill also spoke about the Indian playing XI and stated that the final XI will be decided on the day of the test, after seeing the conditions and the pitch.

“You will get to know the XI tomorrow. Conditions and weather are tempting to play an extra seam. We will take a call tomorrow after seeing the moisture in the pitch,” he told reporters.

Shubman Gill also sent a massive warning to the West Indies, captained by Roston Chase, stating that India would dominate the series and play harsh cricket.

“No easy options… We want to play tough cricket. Every test in England went deep. We are ready to play that tough cricket. We are playing in India after a year; any series is important. We will be looking to dominate the series,” he said.
