India's tour of Sri Lanka 2024
SL vs IND: Top 5 records which Indian batsmen can achieve in the ODI series
The SL vs IND ODI series will be played from August 2 to 7 in Colombo.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led Indian cricket team clinched the SL vs IND T20I series, whitewashing the hosts in Pallekele. The action now moves into the second phase of the tour: a three-match ODI series.
The 50-over matches will be played on August 2, 4 and 7, and all games are to be played at the R. Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.
The ODI series is of great importance to India as it is one of the only two ODI series left for them before the Champions Trophy 2025.
The big guns Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will take the field for the first time since winning the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, while Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah are rested from this series.
Against an out-of-form and depleted Sri Lankan bowling attack, the Indian batters would be looking to make merry in the three ODIs.
5 records the Indian batters can achieve in the SL vs IND ODI series:
1. Virat Kohli – 152 runs short of 14000 ODI runs
Should he score 152 runs in the SL vs IND ODI series, Virat Kohli will become only the third batsman in the history of ODI cricket to get to the 14,000 runs landmark. Currently, he sits with 13848 runs at an average of 58.
Only Sachin Tendulkar (18426) and Kumar Sangakkara (14234) have more ODI runs than Kohli. Kohli has played 280 innings so far. Tendulkar is the fastest to reach 14000 ODI runs, and he took 350 innings to do so. So Kohli is on the way to breaking that record of Tendulkar as well.
2. KL Rahul – 180 runs short of 3000 ODI runs
Rahul is likely to get the nod in the ODI XI over Rishabh Pant as the wicket-keeper batter. Rahul had a terrific World Cup 2023 campaign last year. He would be eyeing a similar campaign in the Champions Trophy next year.
For now, he would be eyeing the milestone of 3000 ODI runs, from which he is 180 runs away. He could get to it in the upcoming SL vs IND ODI series. He averages 50.35 in 75 ODIs.
3. Rohit Sharma needs 65 runs to overtake MS Dhoni and become 11th highest run-scorer in ODIs
India captain Rohit Sharma has amassed 10709 runs in ODIs at an average of 49 and is the 12th highest ODI run-scorer at the moment. He is only 65 runs behind former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who scored 10773 runs in the format. Ahead of them is Rahul Dravid with 10889 runs. Rohit is expected to go past Dhoni at least in this series.
4. Rohit Sharma (323) needs 9 sixes to overtake Chris Gayle (331) in the tally of most ODI sixes
Hailed as one of the most elegant six-hitters, Rohit has a great chance to go past Chris Gayle’s tally of 331 sixes in ODI cricket. He is only eight sixes behind Gayle, who is second on the list of most sixes in ODIs. Shahid Afridi, with 351 sixes, leads this list. By the end of his career, Rohit is likely to overtake Afridi and become the leading six-hitter in ODI cricket.
5. Rohit Sharma needs 6 fours to become the 13th batsman to hit 1000 fours in ODIs
In ODI cricket, Rohit Sharma has stroked 994 fours so far in his career. In the upcoming SL vs IND ODI series, he could get to 1000 fours and become only the 13th batsman to do so in ODI history. Sachin Tendulkar hit the most fours in ODIs (2016). Virat Kohli is fourth on this list with 1294 boundaries.
