Shubman Gill has struggled to get going in T20I cricket.

Former Indian selector Kris Srikkanth has lashed out at Shubman Gill for his poor performances in T20 Internationals. He questioned the batter’s appointment as the vice-captain of the Indian T20I team, saying that his inclusion has tossed up the balance of the side.

Shubman Gill has been under massive pressure of late for his poor performances, especially in T20Is. The opening batter, who ahead of Asia Cup 2025 was appointed as vice-captain in T20Is, didn’t have a great outing in the second T20I against Australia in Melbourne.

Shubman Gill, who opened the innings, struggled right from the start. He was hit on the pads on the very first ball of the match. Then got hit on the head as well. He didn’t look in great shape and it always seemed that he would get out early.

He eventually gave his wicket to Josh Hazlewood and his wicket triggered the Indian collapse. What has been concerning is his form in the format. In the last nine innings, he has only scored 169 runs, averaging 24.14.

If players like Yashasvi Jaiswal are given an opportunity, they’ll utilise it – Kris Srikkanth takes a dig at Shubman Gill

After his failure in the Melbourne T20I, Kris Srikkanth launched an attack on him, saying that he has done nothing to be there in the team as a vice-captain. He made a bold statement, saying that the batter has already been fixed as the vice-captain for ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

“They won’t drop Gill for the next three games. They are not worried about anything else. He is the vice-captain for the T20 World Cup, that’s fixed now. It’s also fixed that he’s the future T20I captain. So they have to play with him and build the balance for the rest of the side. He’s a certainty or else on what basis has he been appointed the vice-captain?” said Srikkanth on his YouTube channel.

Srikkanth also pointed out how Gill’s inclusion has disrupted the balance of the team, keeping Yashasvi Jaiswal on the sidelines. He added:

“Yashasvi Jaiswal is waiting in the wings. He’s not there in the team. With Gill’s inclusion, the overall balance has gone for a toss so they aren’t sure of what to do. Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma don’t have a fixed position and Arshdeep Singh is missing out on the 11. The only good thing is the T20 World Cup is in India so they’ll escape.”

While voicing his concern about Yashasvi Jaiswal’s snub, he said that the batter has an outstanding record in all formats and the IPL. He concluded by saying that if the youngster is given the opportunity, he can destroy the opposition. He added:

“India has a lot of players like Abhishek. If players like Yashasvi Jaiswal are given an opportunity, they’ll utilise it. But now he has no window to come into the side. Only Hardik Pandya can come into the 11 and nobody else. Jaiswal also came through the IPL and has an outstanding record in all formats and the IPL. I am not sure why he isn’t playing with a brilliant IPL and T20I record. Give him the same opportunities, he’ll destroy bowlers at the top,” he concluded.
