Top five nations with most FIFA World Cup titles in history
Only a few countries have been able to achieve this feat
The FIFA World Cup in 2022 is just around the corner. The prestigious competition will be hosted in Qatar for the 22nd time at the end of the year. The World Cup is usually played in the summer.
This edition, however, will take place in November due to weather circumstances in the Asian country.
The World Cup is without a doubt the biggest competition in football, and every player desires to win it for their country.
Throughout history, several countries have dominated. While many countries aspire to make the main draw after arduous qualifying rounds, some have made it a habit to win it.
All attention will be upon these previously successful teams when the World Cup begins later this year in Qatar.
Winning the World Cup once takes incredible effort, but winning it twice takes a team effort and years of hard work.
5. France - 2
France is the defending World Cup winner, having won the tournament in Russia in 2018.
The French won the World Cup in 2018 with a team comprised of exceptional young players like Kylian Mbappe and world-class players like Paul Pogba.
They won their second title by defeating Croatia in the final.
In 1998, France won the World Cup for the first time. At the time, the country was hosting the most major competition. In the final, Les Bleus overcame defending champions Brazil to win the twentieth century's final World Cup.
4. Argentina - 3
Argentina has also won two World Cups in its history. The South Americans won the famous event for the first time in 1978.
They were also the hosts, and they made it all the way thanks to their home fans' backing. In the final, they defeated the Netherlands 3-1.
However, Their second championship came in 1986. Mexico hosted the World Cup that year, which Argentina won 3-2 over West Germany in the final. Uruguay, like France and Argentina, has won two World Cups. Uruguay won it twice, once in 1930 and once in 1950. Lionel Messi helped Argentina claimed their 3rd World Cup in 2022.
3. Italy - 4
The FIFA World Cup has been won four times in a row by Italy. In 1934, when it was just in its second edition and was played in Italy, the nation won the competition for the first time.
The government claimed the 1938 competition to repeat its triumph and defend its world championship title.
It took Italy 44 years after that to earn its third World Cup championship. They defeated West Germany 3-1 in the championship match of the 1982 competition, with goals from Marco Tardelli, Paolo Rossi, and Alessandro Altobelli. The last time Italy won the World Cup was in 2006.
In a gripping championship match against France, Zinedine Zidane was dismissed for mocking Marco Materazzi. On penalties, the Azzurri won the championship. However, Italy did not qualify for the 2018 and the upcoming 2022 World Cup.
2. Germany - 4
Germany has won the World Cup four times, making it just the second nation to do so after Italy. In the past, the Germans dominated the competition, taking first place in 1954, 1974, 1990, and 2014.
Three of the four World Cups were won by Germany, including the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, which it hosted as a small nation.
The most recent victory was truly noteworthy because it saw the Germans overcome the Brazilian hosts by a score of 7-1 en route to the championship. In the championship game versus Argentina, Mario Gotze famously scored the game-winning goal in the 113th minute.
1. Brazil - 5
In terms of FIFA World Cup triumphs, Brazil is the most successful country. They have five victories, making them the tournament's most dominant squad.
Pele played for the Selecao in the 1958 World Cup when he scored twice in the final to give the country its first trophy.
Brazil won the World Cup in 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002 as well. Selecao aspires to be the first South American country to win the World Cup in 20 years in Qatar. Brazil has also appeared in every World Cup since its inception.
They are regarded as one of Qatar's favourite teams to win the World Cup.
