We're built to frustrate teams like India: Jamie Day
The 40-year-old was impressed with the display shown by the Bengal Tigers and at the same time admitted disappointment with the late equalizer.
Bangladesh almost pulled off their perfect story, but were held 1-1 by India at the Salt Lake Stadium on Wednesday. Despite getting a goal before the break and nearly hanging onto a historic win, Adil Khan’s last-minute header broke the Jamie Day-led Bengal Tigers' hearts.
Regardless of the last-minute setback, Jamie Day was a delighted man hailing his side’s performance during India Vs Bangladesh Post Match conference.
“We played exceptionally well today. We frustrated India and the boys stuck to the game plan. I thought we had some great chances in the second half. It’s disappointing to concede in the end, as I thought we had done everything to get three points. But, to come to a place like Kolkata and play like that is a fantastic achievement," he said.
Citing the game as a moral victory for the Bengal Tigers, Day went on to quote, "We’re 85 places behind India. We draw them and could’ve even won it. That result is fantastic. It’s disappointing to only get one point in the end after that performance.”
[KH_ADWORDS type="3" align="center"][/KH_ADWORDS]When speaking about how he was disheartened at the chances they scuffed throughout the game, he said, “I’m disappointed as we conceded so late from a set-piece, even though it was a great header in the end."
"We showed a lot of heart and determination in the game. I’m disappointed, but we rode our luck at times in the game, which makes it a fair result in the end," he added.
The Bengal Tigers had been dealt a heavy defeat the last time these two teams met in India back in 2011 and when speaking on the change in performance-levels from them to today, Day said, “I think if you look at the performance today and the difference in the FIFA rankings and infrastructure, it’s an unbelievable result for us."
"Last month, India were touting about Qatar-India, but this is as good a result as that. We came and played in front of 60,000 people and gave a great fight. I can’t fault the effort and determination the boys have given today."
"If we were more clinical we could’ve even done two up today. That’s something we need to work on."
Despite dealing their World Cup hopes a hammer blow, Jamie Day praised the Indian’s team style and stated his appreciation for Igor Stimac. He said, "India had a lot of possession and tried their way to pass the ball. We’re built to frustrate teams and I think we did that today."
[KH_RELATED_NEWS title="Related News | Article Continues Below"][/KH_RELATED_NEWS]"If you’re disciplined, you are hard to beat. India had the possession and passed really well, but we didn’t allow them to create big chances. Igor’s a really good guy who has India planned the right way into the future," added the 40 year-old during India Vs Bangladesh Post Match conference.
Finally, when asked on whether the superior midfield numbers helped his side deal with India’s threat, Day finished with, “We had to play a certain way against teams that are better than us. That’s not being disrespectful to our boys. We must be disciplined and have to counter-attack repeatedly."
"India had a lot of the ball, but we frustrated them well. It was good to take the lead which gave us some breathing space and caused India problems. I felt our gameplan worked wonders, up until we conceded towards the end.”
