There is already a huge question mark on Carles Cuadrat’s future after three consecutive defeats.

Carles Cuadrat’s East Bengal suffered their third straight loss in the Indian Super League (ISL) in the 3-2 defeat to FC Goa at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata on Friday (27 September). The Red & Gold Brigade were haunted by their former midfielder Borja Herrera, whose stunning hat-trick helped them take all three points for the visitors.

Carles Cuadrat was disappointed with the result and how his side lost another game. He explained the result and potential solution for this bad form: “We lost a lot of the team (key players) for today. We tried to make a plan for the match and they scored from their first three chances, it’s difficult when that happens. We are a team allowing fewer chances than the opponents, they scored four times from 19 chances in recent games.

“We are in a situation when everything going against us. It’s difficult when you are 2-0 down at home, we substituted in the second half to bring more energy into the match. We put balls in the box and were close to scoring, but it didn’t go our way. In the three matches we’ve played in the ISL so far, we’ve been fighting to get goals but things have not been happening.

“The solution is to keep working, to do analyses on what we need from the players, we need key players to recover. Maybe Dimitrios Diamantakos and Saul Crespo can play in the next game and keep working on his solution,” Carles also added.

Despite suffering the fifth straight loss in all competitions, Carles Cuadrat remains optimistic about the future because he believes his squad is built just for that. He stated: “I think we have a team for future success. We have a lot of young players and they have lengthy contracts. They have played for the India U-23 team too.

“We have players like Anwar Ali, Jeakson Singh, Naorem Mahesh and even Mohammad Rakip who have played for the national team. They are players who can be part of a strong squad in time. The youngsters have been helping us a lot, bringing us into the games. Players like PV Vishnu, Sayan Banerjee and Aman CK might not be part of the first XI but they’ve been bringing goals and assists.

“The squad is built for the future. The club have to be optimistic about what we are getting in the club, to work and make a better team. At the moment, it’s clear that the current situation makes us all feel very frustrated, that is normal.

“We just lost at home, but we made a big effort against Altyn Asyr and the people were happy with the team and the performance at the end of that home game. Now we are out of that competition but can play in the AFC Challenge League. People were optimistic after that game.

“Unfortunately, we came into this game after three losses. Of course, the reaction today hasn’t been good because we are in a dynamic of losing games. I can understand the supporters’ emotions, we know that they love the players and the club. When the results come, the people will wish the best for the team as it has always been happening,” Carles Cuadrat further added.

The Red & Gold Brigade will desperately look for their first win of the ISL campaign in their next game against Jamshedpur FC on 5 October.
