These are the most expensive squads competing in the Durand Cup this season.
Ahead of the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 season, the teams are already knee-deep at work testing out their rosters. The Durand Cup has proved to be a good platform for unearthing talent and improving team chemistry for both I-League and ISL clubs.
That is the reason why even super-stacked clubs like Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Mumbai City tend to send their younger contingents to the competition. But regarding overall squad value only one of the clubs mentioned above have made it into the list.
These are the top 10 most valuable squads competing in the Durand Cup 2024. (Values according to transfermarkt)
10. Chennaiyin FC – INR 5.2 Cr
The Marina Machans have broken into this list ahead of more routine names like Mumbai City and FC Goa with an overall squad value of INR 5.2 Crores. Although the Gaurs and Islanders haven’t been featured since they sent their youth squads, Chennaiyin FC’s net worth has been bumped up by their new arrivals.
While most of the foreigners aren’t playing in the Durand Cup, the two-time ISL winners have notable Indian doyens like Alexander Romario Jesuraj playing for them in the competition.
9. Shillong Lajong FC – INR 12.9 Cr
The I-League side ranks 9th with a roster valued at INR 12.96 Crores and has registered its original squad for the Durand Cup. Shillong Lajong FC have only made a few youth signings this season but their foreigner contingent is their most valuable asset.
Brazilian trio Renan Paulino, Goncalves, and Douglas Tardin make up for a sizeable chunk of the squad value with a total of INR 5 Crores between them. The Reds also have talented right-back Kynsai Khongsit and defender Ronney Wilson Kharbudon contributing a good INR 2.2 Cr.
8. Inter Kashi – INR 17.4 Cr
Inter Kashi is the I-League’s most expensive representative at the competition with a team valued at INR 17.4 Crores. The Arata Izumi-led side will have Antonio Habas taking over when the I-League season starts and have signed proven players in this transfer window.
Nikola Stojanovic left Gokulam Kerala to join the Varanasi-based side, adding a whopping INR 2.4 Cr to their overall squad value. The Serbian midfielder has already proven his worth with a goal for Inter Kashi in their Durand Cup draw against Mohammedan SC.
7. Punjab FC – INR 24.6 Cr
Punjab FC’s squad features in the seventh position as the figure jumps by a substantial amount, to INR 24.6 Crores. Filip Mrzljak is the Shers’ most valuable addition this season at INR 4 Cr. The midfielder has also proven his worth with an assist for Luka Majcen in their 3-0 victory over CISF Protectors in the Durand Cup.
Majcen is also another standout performer for the side in the competition with two goals already and is worth INR 1.4 Cr.
6. Jamshedpur FC – INR 25.6 Cr
The Red Miners have a slightly more expensive team worth INR 25.6 Crores and are playing with the same squad in the pre-season tournament. Jamshedpur’s acquisition of striker duo Javi Siverio and Jordan Murray alongside midfielder Javi Hernandez have improved their net worth.
While Murray scored to help the Men of Steel to their second successive victory in the Durand Cup, they have mostly profited from goals by younger Indian players like Mohammed Sanan.
5. NorthEast United FC – INR 31.6 Cr
The Highlanders are the first ISL squad on this list in the 30 Crore region with a net worth of INR 31.6 Cr. Like Jamshedpur, NorthEast United have also benefitted from their younger signings more than their imports.
Striker Alaeddine Ajaraie and Guillermo Fernandez may be two of their most valuable players at INR 2.6 and 2.4 Cr each, but debutant youngster Ankit Padmanabhan scored in their 2-0 victory against Bodoland Army in the Durand Cup.
4. Bengaluru FC – INR 33.6 Cr
Bengaluru have been very active in the transfer market and their newest signings Jorge Pereyra Diaz, Rahul Bheke, and Edgar Mendez have increased their squad’s value by a huge INR 8.4 Cr margin. What’s more, Diaz has silenced doubters with a brace as he was joined on the scoresheet by the returning Bheke in a thumping 4-0 victory over Indian Navy in the Durand Cup.
Mendez also opened his account for the Blues shortly after in their 3-1 victory against Inter Kashi with a goal. Standing in at fourth place with a squad worth INR 33.6 Cr, the Blues are raring to go all the way.
3. East Bengal FC – INR 41 Cr
Yet another club that owes INR 9.6 Crores of its current value to foreign signings, East Bengal is third on this list with its squad’s market value at INR 41 Cr. The Torchbearers have Kerala Blasters trio Dimitri Diamantakos, Nishu Kumar, Jeakson Singh, and Punjab’s Madih Talal to thank for that.
Frenchman Talal has a staggering INR 5.6 Crore price tag but INR 4 Cr striker Diamantakos has already justified his value with a goal in East Bengal’s opening victory against Indian Air Force.
2. Kerala Blasters FC – INR 50.2 Cr
Noah Sadaoui’s addition to the ranks of the stellar Adrian Luna and Milos Drincic have turned the Tuskers into mammoths with an overall value of INR 50.2 Cr. The Moroccan winger has already hit the ground running with Kerala Blasters, scoring a hattrick in their 8-0 thrashing of Mumbai City in the Durand Cup.
Getting the INR 5.2 Cr on a free transfer was an absolute bargain for the second-placed side on this list.
1. Mohun Bagan Super Giant – INR 63 Cr
The most valuable club at the Durand Cup 2024 is none other than ISL League Winners’ Shield winners, Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Standing out with a mind-boggling squad worth INR 63 Cr, the Mariners have made waves in the transfer market this season.
With the notable additions of Jamie Maclaren, Greg Stewart, and Apuia, their squad worth has increased by a massive INR 17.6 Cr with the Australian striker alone accounting for INR 12 Cr.
