The Croatian tactician was happy with the way his substitutes changed the course of the game in the second half.

NorthEast United clinched a late 0-1 win against Hyderabad FC at the GMC Balayogi Athletic Stadium on Wednesday. The home team looked the better in the contest, but the Highlanders got lucky when a shot on goal was handled in the box by Shankar Sampingiraj. The resulting penalty was then tucked in by Maximiliano Barreiro in the 86th minute, as head coach Robert Jarni heaved a sigh of relief.

After the game the winning coach met mediapersons at the customary post-match press conference.

Speaking on the game the Croatian said, “We prepared for the game knowing it was going to be tough and intense. We didn’t play very good in the first half and at half-time we made a couple of changes. We tried to have more possession in the game and we could change the game a little bit.”

He was content with the three points earned saying, “Of course, every time you get three points you are happy and satisfied with the team. Now, going into the international break with 21 days to prepare before the next game we are very happy.”

The tactician responded to the question of his team’s unbeaten streak and said, “You don’t know about things in the future, but we are going to work to keep this unbeaten run going.”

Impact Of The Substitutes

The coach made a couple of changes at the interval and also his hand was forced when he had to bring off Asamoah Gyan. Eventually, those substitutions tilted the game in the visitors' favour. Speaking on the impact they had, he said, “When you make two changes at half-time, you don’t expect to make the last substitution anytime soon. But, that happened and in football you need to adapt to these situations. We were fortunate because we had very good players on the bench who could change the game.”

“After they came on, we had more possession and more play in the attacking areas,” Robert Jarni went on to add.

The late penalty was the deciding factor in the game going to the Highlanders, but the tactician wasn’t willing to concede that the win was down to pure luck.

“Yes, a penalty can be counted as a set-piece, but that was an outcome of our attacking play. It’s not that we played looking for a penalty. Also, you need to work on set-pieces because they can give you the three points.”
