This story arises from the 1997 episode “The Cartridge Family,” where a promotional spot for a soccer match boldly claiming to determine ‘which nation is the greatest on earth: Mexico or Portugal,’ is billed as taking place in Springfield.

However, the show fails to address the year, the World Cup, or the result of the match. The scene is merely a fictional TV commercial and not a forecast related to any genuine occurrence.

Both Portugal & Mexico have qualified for the 2026 World Cup

Both Portugal and Mexico are going to play in the competition next year. The Selecao qualified after beating Armenia 9-1 in the qualifiers, while Mexico already booked their place in the tournament as a host nation.

Although highly unlikely, it still remains to be seen if the nations will face each other in the final of the 2026 World Cup. They might certainly face each other at any stage of the competition, and the Selecao boast a good chance to beat the host nations, given the quality of the squad.
