Vinod Tanwar diagnosed with COVID-19, set to miss Asian Boxing Championship

The boxer will now not be a part of the Indian contingent that landed in Dubai on Saturday.

Vinod Tanwar is set to miss the upcoming ASBC Asian Boxing Championships after testing positive for COVID-19. He was initially part of the Indian contingent at the event, but has withdrawn after catching the disease.

He was not part of the camp at the time he tested positive. “Vinod Tanwar was in his hometown where an RT-PCR test was conducted. However, with the reports coming positive, Tanwar was advised to be in isolation. The team management decided not to add any replacement in the 49kg category,” said a BFI spokesperson.

The Indian contingent on Saturday landed in Dubai for the 2021 ASBC Asian Boxing Championships. They were spearheaded by six-time champion Mary Kom and defending champion Amit Phangal. .

The 31 member Indian contingent comprising 19 players and members of support staff flew on a special bio bubble SpiceJet aircraft from Delhi. This was because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation of the country.

“Indian contingent has landed in Dubai and reached the hotel. Two rounds of RT-PCR test have been conducted--one at the airport and the other at the hotel. Indian team flew on SpiceJet flight under the air bubble agreement with all necessary and relevant permissions.

The seven Indian Olympic-bound pugilists, including Amit Panghal (52kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), MC Mary Kom (51kg), Simranjeet Kaur (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg) and Pooja Rani (75kg) alongside the other Indian boxers will compete at the Championships. Spectators will witness a high-voltage action in presence of top Asian and Olympic qualified boxers from all the major Asian boxing powerhouses.

In the last edition of the Championships held in Bangkok India returned with an 13 medals including two gold. The matches at the 2021 Asian Championships commence from Mary 24 and will go on till June 1.

(Men): Amit Panghal (52kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (56kg), Varinder Singh (60kg), Shiva Thapa (64kg), Vikas Krishan (69kg), Ashish Kumar (75kg), Sumit Sangwan (81kg), Sanjeet (91kg) and Narender (+91kg).

(Women): Monika (48kg), MC Mary Kom (51kg), Sakshi (54kg), Jasmine (57kg), Simranjeet Kaur (60kg), Lalbuatsaihi (64kg), Lovlina Borgohain (69kg), Pooja Rani (75kg), Saweety (81kg) and Anupama (+81kg).
