Police have nabbed the Olympian regarding the death of a wrestler in New Delhi.
Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar is in trouble with the authorities. The 37-year-old is allegedly involved in the murder of a national level wrestler, Sagar Dhankhar. The murder reportedly took place outside the Chattarsal Stadium in New Delhi. Delhi Police are investigation Kumar’s role in the whole incident and have nabbed the Olympian.
The reputation of the wrestler, who has won accolades on the international level is on the line with outcome of the investigation awaited. Below is a timeline of the whole controversy:
May 4, 2021
Reputed media outlets report the death of an individual near the parking lot of the Chattarsal Stadium. The initial investigation suggested that the individual was Sagar Dhankhar, son of a Delhi Police Head Constable. Around 20 people armed with baseball bats and hockey sticks attacked Sagar and his friends. Moreover, Sushil was also present during the incident after an altercation took place between the two parties. The incident took place in the parking lot of the Chattarsal Stadium, located in the North-West part of Delhi.

Delhi Police issues a look-out-circular (LOC) for Sushil Kumar after the wrestler absconded and could not be traced. The investigators released the notice after nabbing one of the alleged assailants and Kumar’s aides, Prince Dalal. “Dalal was arrested from the spot and we seized his cellphone, two double-barrel guns along with seven live cartridges of 12 bore from his possession. After investigation, we have found that the guns were registered in the name of one resident of Ashoda village in Haryana’s Jhajjar,” police said in a statement.

Sushil Kumar is the only athlete to win two individual Olympic medals that brought immense pride to India. Wrestling Federation of India laments the dent in the reputation of the sport after the recent series of events. WFI Assistant Secretary Vinod Tomar insists that any action against Kumar will take place only after the police investigation has run its course.

A Delhi-court issues a non-bailable warrant against Sushil Kumar and others involved in the murder case. A senior police officer said, “We moved an application before the court to issue a non-bailable warrant (NBW) against wrestler Sushil Kumar and six others in the case, and as per request, the application is approved and accordingly NBWs have been issued against them.”

Delhi Police announces a ₹1 lakh cash reward for information leading to the arrest of Sushil Kumar. Apparently, In order to avoid the arrest, Sushil absconds to Rishikesh through Haridwar, according to reports.
May 18, 2021
A Delhi-court refuses to grant anticipatory bail to Sushil Kumar, citing that the wrestler is prima facie the main conspirator and allegations against are serious in nature. Jagdish Kumar, additional session’s judge, denied the bail to Kumar considering the serious nature of the accusations.
The judge noted that, “The investigation is still going on and some of the accused persons have not been arrested so far. The NBWS [non-bailable warrant] has already been issued against the accused.”
