Murali Sreeshankar looses out on medal at World Athletics Championships
Parul Chaudhary and Madari Palliyalil Jabir too failed in their respective events.
India’s Murali Sreeshankar, who became the first-ever Indian male athlete to qualify for the World Athletics Championships 2022 Finals, failed to live up to the expectations in the medal event. He finished 7th in the finals with a best jump of 7.96m on Sunday.
Sreeshankar had three legal jumps of 7.96m, 7.89m and 7.83m, while the other three attempts were fouls. The 23-year-old must be disappointed with his performance in the finals as he could not cross the 8m mark in all his six attempts. His jump was way below his personal best of 8.36m. Indian fans must have thought of a historic medal at the biggest athletics event, but now they have to wait for the next time.
China’s Jianan Wang won the gold with a magnificent jump of 8.36m, while Olympic champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece won the silver with a best effort of 8.30m.
In other events on Day 2 of the World Athletics Championships, Parul Chaudhary had her personal best performance of 9:38.09 in the 3000m steeplechase to finish 12th in heat number two to miss out on the finals. Parul’s previous best was 9:38.29 that she ran during the Indian Grand Prix series in Thiruvananthapuram in March.
Another disappointment for India came in the men’s 400m hurdles, where Madari Palliyalil Jabir failed to advance to the semifinals after finishing 7th in Heat 2. He took 50.76s to complete the race. Jabir finished 31st overall across five heats. He has a personal best of 49.13s, but he recorded a season’s best of 49.76s and won the gold at the National Inter-State Championships.
