The Polish became first woman to defend French open title since 2007.

Iga Świątek is no stranger to making history. The 21-year-old Polish star has been dominating the women’s tennis circuit since her breakthrough season in 2022, when she won three Grand Slam titles and became the youngest world No. 1 in WTA history.

Even after such a stellar year, Świątek did not rest on her laurels. She continued to impress and inspire with her remarkable performances in 2023, winning six titles, including her fourth French Open and her maiden WTA Finals, and finishing the year as the top-ranked player for the second consecutive time.

In this article lets look at Iga Swiatek’s achievements in 2023

Fourth woman in WTA history to be ranked no.1 for 40 or more weeks

Iga Swiatek, the trailblazing tennis player from Poland, first ascended to the no. 1 spot in the WTA rankings on April 4th, 2022. Remarkably, since the inception of the WTA rankings in 1975, Swiatek is only the fourth woman to achieve the feat of staying in the coveted spot for 40 or more consecutive weeks. Other tennis stars ahead of her are Steffi Graf, Martina Hingis and Serena Williams.

French Open 2023 – Winner

By beating Karolína Muchová in three sets, Iga Świątek defended her French Open and won her fourth major title. She joined Monica Seles and Naomi Osaka as the only women to win their first four major finals, and became the youngest four-time major winner since 2002. In the whole tournament, the Polish international lost only one set that too in the final.

Poland Open 2023 – Winner

In a one-sided final, Iga Świątek crushed Laura Siegemund 6–0, 6–1 to claim the WTA Poland Open title. It was a historic moment for Świątek, who won her first tournament in her home country and her 15th WTA title overall. She was unstoppable throughout the week, winning all her matches in straight sets. Siegemund, on the other hand, had a remarkable run to her first WTA final since 2017 and her first on the hard court, but could not match Świątek’s level.

WTA Finals – Winner

In the WTA Finals 2023, Iga Świątek showcased an extraordinary performance by defeating Jessica Pegula in the final with a commanding score of 6–1, 6–0. This victory not only earned her the title but also marked a historic moment in her career. Świątek’s flawless performance throughout the tournament was reminiscent of Elina Svitolina’s unbeaten run in 2018, as she did not lose a single match. Moreover, she emulated Serena Williams’ 2012 feat by not dropping a set throughout the tournament.

Her dominance was further highlighted by the fact that she dropped only 20 games in total, the fewest since the round-robin format was reintroduced in 2003. This achievement underscores her exceptional skill and tenacity on the court. By clinching the title, Świątek dethroned Aryna Sabalenka to regain the coveted WTA world no. 1 ranking.

Interestingly, this was the first WTA Finals since 1988 where both finalists reached the final without losing a set, adding another layer of significance to Świątek’s remarkable victory.
