Top five tennis tournaments to watch out for in 2025
The first Grand Slam Major is set to begin on January 12.
The new season has kick-started with the Brisbane International competition which witnessed Aryna Sabalenka lift the trophy. The event was one last chance for athletes to gauge themselves ahead of the first Grand Slam of the 2025 calendar year.
Last year was a season full of thrills and unexpected moments. Novak Djokovic won Olympic gold, Carlos Alcaraz won both Roland Garros and Wimbledon, and Jannik Sinner became the new world number one and won at the Australian and US Open. Icons of the sport- Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray announced retirement making it a bittersweet year.

Women’s tennis had no shortage of drama with Aryna Sabalenka winning both the Australian and US Open and dethroning Iga Swiatek, winner of the French Open, to become the new World Number One. Fans were in for a surprise at Wimbledon as Barbora Krejcikova shocked everyone and went on to win the Championship.
At the Paris Games, Swiatek was stunned by Qinwen Zheng, who became the first Chinese to win an Olympic Gold in tennis. Last year was full of high-voltage tennis, emotions, drama, entertainment and controversies and 2025 is expected to be the same.
On that note, let’s take a look at the top five tennis tournaments to watch out for in 2025.
5. United Cup
Surpassing Davis Cup, the United Cup has become the most followed group event in tennis in 2024 and excitement will be high for the next season. As the final event of the year, the competition offers players the opportunity to represent their country for the final time in their bid for the crown.

United Cup 2025-26 will be the 4th edition of the tournament, with the USA winning two titles. It was heartbreaking for Poland, who made the finals only to finish runner-ups for the second consecutive time. 18 countries qualified for the competition and team Kazakhstan who were making their debut finished as the semi-finalists who were led by Elena Rybakina, almost single-handedly.
4. Roland Garros
The most important clay tournament will be held in the last week of May after the French Open and Australian Open. Carlos Alcaraz, will look to defend his crown while Novak Djokovic will be hoping for his fourth French Open triumph. Current top seed Jannik Sinner is yet to win in Paris and will be eager to open her account in what promises to be a fierce battle.
Iga Swiatek will enter the competition as a clear favorite having won four out of five Slams at this venue. She is undoubtedly the best player on clay but Zheng’s heroics at the Games indicate she is not undefeatable.
3. US Open
The final Grand Slam of the calendar year gives players one final gig to complete the season on a high. The 2023 US Open saw Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner end on a positive note. Sinner particularly had a point to prove due to doping accusations but he came clean big time defeating home boy Taylor Fritz in the final.
The 2024 tournament was filled with surprises, featuring unexpected upsets such as early exits from defending champions Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff, along with defeats for 2022 US Open winners Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek. As the 2025 US Open approaches, it could potentially serve as the final appearance for several high-profile, aging players, including possibly Novak Djokovic, marking the end of an era in tennis.
2. Australian Open
The tennis season starts with the Australian Open. It is a chance for players to begin fresh ahead of a long year and similar to the US Open, Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner will fight to defend their titles. Sabalenka particularly would be hoping for a hat-trick of AO titles.

Novak Djokovic would be looking to extend his domination at the Rod Laver Arena where he has 10 titles and is yet to lose a final in the competition. The likes of Alcaraz, Swiatek and Gauff are yet to win in Melbourne and would be desperate to end their drought.
1. Wimbledon
The Wimbledon Championship is in many ways the home of tennis, giving the game many moments of brilliance. The 2019 and 2023 finals are top contenders for the greatest matches ever played in sports history, with Djokovic featuring in both. Carlos Alcaraz defended his crown rather comfortably in 2024 and would be hoping for a repeat.
Top seed Jannik Sinner is yet to win on grass. Djokovic on the other hand has won Wimbledon on seven instances and is one short of equalling Roger Federer’s record eight titles. The Serbian player had to fight on and off the field, including several instances of altercation with the crowd.
None of the WTA top seeds have won in London, with only Elena Rybakina (who’s now seeded 6th) having won the championship back in 2022. Swiatek, Sabalenka and Gauff do not have great records on grass and would be eager to turn things around by creating history in the UK this year.
