Daniel Evans defeated Karen Khachanov in five hours and 35 minutes during the first round of the US Open 2024.

The US Open 2024 first round match between Daniel Evans and Karen Khachanov became the longest match in the tournament’s history with the scoreboard reading 6-7(8), 7-6(2), 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4. Evans was on the verge of exiting the event as he was down to 0-4 in the fifth set but managed to scrape a comeback to create a record.

The crowd was on its feet as Evans celebrated the win after the shake of hands at the net. The match lasted for five hours and 35 minutes. Each set of the match lasted for more than a hour in which the fifth set was the longest as it went on for 72 minutes.

Khachanov was a point away from serving for the match in the fifth game of the decider. After failing to win the fifth game, the moment slipped away from the Russian’s grasp. Evans went on to win six consecutive games to take the match. His groundstrokes kept picking up speed and recorded his fifth win in as many matches against Khachanov.

It was the pair’s first meeting at a grand slam but delivered a battle to remember for ages. The crowd was almost up on its feet twice during the final point as Khachanov scraped hard to send the ball. He succeeded once but on his second attempt a backhand to the net confirmed his exit from the event.

Whose record did Daniel Evans and Karen Khachanov break at US Open 2024?

Evans and Khachanov broke a 32-year-record of Stefan Edberg and Michael Chang. The former players clashed in the semifinals at New York in 1992 as Edberg defeated Chang in five hours and 26 minutes with a scoreline of 6-7(3), 7-5, 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-4. Evans and Khachanov beat the record by nine minutes.

Khachanov has now lost in the opening round at Flushing Meadows for the second time as he had suffered the same fate in 2023. Meanwhile, Evans has entered the second round for the fifth consecutive season. He will face Mariano Navone next and hope it will be a much shorter encounter.
