Newly minted World No. #1, Jannik Sinner, will look to plant the Italian flag at Wimbledon.

Jannik Sinner, hailing from San Candido in Northern Italy, has made the quarterfinals or better at all eight tournaments he has played so far in 2024. Sinner has won four titles this year, including at the Halle Open a week before Wimbledon 2024. The event at Halle was his first after taking over as the ATP World No. #1, one of only eight men to achieve that feat of winning their first tournament after becoming the top ranked ATP singles player.

An injured hip forced Sinner to withdraw from the Madrid Open in the last eight match against Felix Auger-Aliassime, subsequently missing his home event, the Italian Open. The Italian was fully fit in time for Roland Garros, where he reached the semifinals for the first time.

Sinner will next be seen in action at Wimbledon 2024, where he will look to bag his second grass court title and his second major title of the season.

First Round: Yannick Hanfmann

Sinner is set to begin his Wimbledon campaign with a first-round rematch against Yannick Hanfmann in their second meeting on tour. They last played in the first round of the 2023 US Open, which Sinner won. The Italian was a semifinalist last year, while his German rival is yet to make it past the first round at SW19.

Second Round: Matteo Berrettini

Jannik Sinner is likely to find fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini across the net in the second round. The pair have met once previously at the ATP Masters event in Canada last season, where Sinner duly won. Berrettini has a final appearance in Wimbledon under his belt, while Sinner is trailing his compatriot in that department. Berrettini has made two ATP 250 level finals this season, in Marrakech on clay and Stuttgart on grass.

Third Round: Tallon Griekspoor

The last time Griekspoor played Sinner in the opening round at Halle, the Dutchman gave the top seed a scare. Sinner recouped to rally past Griekspoor after losing a closely contested first set to win 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year-old Sinner maintained his unbeaten run against the Dutch player to go up 5-0 after the hard-fought win.

It will be a testing time for the Dutch World No. #28, who has yet to find a way past the second round at Wimbledon should he find himself playing the second seed at the event.

Fourth Round: Ben Shelton

Ben Shelton took the first win in the ATP head-to-head against Jannik Sinner back in 2023 in the fourth round of the Shanghai Masters. Sinner was quick to reverse the result in Vienna, a tournament he went on to win. The Italian also prevailed over Shelton in the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters this year.

Should they play in London in the upcoming fortnight, it will be their first meeting on grass. The American made his Wimbledon debut last season, making a second-round exit against Serbian Laslo Djere in four sets.

Quarterfinals: Daniil Medvedev

Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev are seeded to meet in the quarterfinals in what will be their third face-to-face meeting this season. Sinner took both wins against Medvedev this season at the season-opening Grand Slam in Melbourne in January and in the Miami Open semi-final two months later.

While Sinner’s star began to shine, Medvedev’s form took a dip, and the reversal of fortunes saw the Russian drop to No. #5 in the ATP Rankings. The gritty Russian is an old hand at the game and was a semifinalist at last year’s Wimbledon. Medvedev also reached the semifinal stage or better in four consecutive tournaments in 2024.

Semifinals: Carlos Alcaraz

The rivalry between the two current-generation players began in 2019 in the Challenger circuit. Playing in the ATP Tour, the duo have met in the semifinals on the past six occasions. Their most recent meeting was in Roland Garros, with Carlos Alcaraz taking the win.

Their only match on grass was played out at Wimbledon in the round of 16 in 2022. The Italian claimed the win that year against the Spaniard.

Alcaraz arrives in SW19 bearing the mantle of defending champion. In the tune-up event to Wimbledon, Alcaraz had to watch Sinner lift the trophy at Halle Open while he made an early exit at Queen’s Club Championships in the second round to Jack Draper.

Finals: Novak Djokovic/Alexander Zverev

A Sinner/Djokovic title clash would be a replay of the Australian Open final from six months ago. Sinner had then upset Djokovic’s apple cart by denying the Serbian a record 11th Australian Open trophy. Novak Djokovic finds himself without a title this far into the season and gave Casper Ruud a walkover in last month’s French Open.

The 24 Grand Slam title winner injured his right knee en route to his fourth-round win against Francisco Cerundolo.

Djokovic enjoys a 4-3 head-to-head lead against Sinner, including the two wins in as many matches in Wimbledon.

Zverev would be a tricky customer for Sinner, seeing that the German is 4-1 up against the Italian World No. #1. The last time Sinner won against Zverev was in the 2020 French Open. Since then, Sinner hasn’t been able to get the measure of World No. #4. To Sinner’s advantage, he is a better performer on grass than his German rival, whose best result is the fourth round in 2021. The Italian was a semifinalist in London last year.
