The Hurt Business even though not part of the WWE will still be remembered
The Hurt Business was one of WWE’s most dominant and stylish factions, led by Bobby Lashley, MVP, Shelton Benjamin and later Cedric Alexander.
Despite their success, the group was disbanded prematurely, which drew criticism from fans and even members of the stable. Bobby Lashley, in particular, has often reminisced about the stable’s success and the fun they had during its run.
Recently, Lashley opened up about the origins of The Hurt Business during a virtual signing with “K&S WrestleFest,” shedding light on how the faction came to be and where the name originated. Reflecting on his time with the group, Lashley shared, “Looking back, it was probably the ‘funniest’ time in my career. We had something really special.”
Who first introduced the idea of Hurt Business?
Before forming The Hurt Business, Lashley was involved in a storyline with Lana, but he was eager to explore a different direction for his character. He envisioned a persona that combined elements of famous figures such as Suge Knight and Don King, showcasing a confident, no-nonsense attitude.
“MVP was not in the WWE at the time when I was doing that stuff with Lana,” Lashley recalled. “I wanted to do something different and create a character that was based on Suge Knight, Don King, and several others.” His vision for a more dynamic and imposing character led him to think about forming a faction, but he needed the right partner to make it work.
MVP played a huge role in the groups’ formation
The idea began to take shape when Lashley spotted MVP backstage at the 2020 Royal Rumble. Seeing MVP again sparked an idea, and Lashley quickly realized that the veteran could play the role of the character he had envisioned.
“He was backstage at the Royal Rumble, and I saw him, and I was like, ‘This is the guy.’ I thought he would be a better fit for what I wanted to do,” Lashley said. MVP’s charismatic personality, combined with Lashley’s in-ring dominance, formed the foundation of what would become The Hurt Business.
What was the inspiration behind the name?
The name “The Hurt Business” wasn’t just a random choice; it had a personal meaning to Lashley. During the signing, he revealed that the name came from a t-shirt his coach was wearing while he was training for boxing.
“I always thought that name was cool, and I said to myself, ‘When I get back into wrestling, I’ll do The Hurt Business,’” he explained. This inspiration stuck with him, and when he began to form the stable, he knew exactly what he wanted to call it.
Before moving forward, Lashley approached Shelton Benjamin and MVP to discuss the idea. The trio clicked immediately, and the concept of The Hurt Business was born. However, Lashley didn’t want to proceed without confirming it with the person who had inspired the name. He reached out to his coach and got the green light to use the name.
