Here are the best Kings WWE has ever crowned
WWE is gearing up for its next big PLE event the WWE King and Queen of the Ring Premium Live Event, scheduled to take place at the Jeddah Superdome in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on May 25.
The King of the Ring event has a storied history in WWE, having elevated numerous superstars to main event status, including legends like Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, and Edge. Before the new King is crowned in Jeddah, let’s look back at the five greatest King of the Ring Tournament winners in WWE history:
5. Kurt Angle
The Olympic gold medalist and WWE Hall of Famer Kurt Angle won the King of the Ring Tournament in 2000. It featured a staggering 32 competitors gunning for the crown.
Angle’s victory initiated his main event push, culminating in his WWE Championship win over The Final Boss, The Rock. Known for his submission techniques and athletic prowess, Angle’s success in the tournament solidified his reputation as one of WWE’s top stars which would change the business forever.

4. Brock Lesnar
The Beast Incarnate, Brock Lesnar made an immediate impact upon his debut in 2002 by winning the King of the Ring Tournament in just three months.
This victory set the stage for his historic match against the then-top star of the company, The Rock at SummerSlam 2002, where he defeated The Great One and became the youngest WWE Champion in history, courtesy of the King of the Ring tournament and his own brute strength.
3. Owen Hart
Owen Hart was known for his incredible in-ring skills and for delivering some of the best performances inside the squared circle. He won the King of the Ring Tournament in 1994, which became a turning point in his career by outlasting The Bad Guy, Razor Ramon in the finals.
Although Owen Hart never captured a World Title in WWE, his King of the Ring victory was crucial in establishing him as a standout performer much like his brother, Bret Hart.

2. Stone Cold Steve Austin
Stone Cold Steve Austin is arguably one of the biggest stars in WWE history. However, his popularity soared after winning the 1996 King of the Ring Tournament after multiple failed gimmicks. The sight was memorable when Stone Cold delivered the iconic Austin 3:16 promo following his win over Jake ‘The Snake’ Roberts.
This moment marked the beginning of Austin’s rise to prominence and the dawn of the Attitude Era, which saw The Texas Rattlesnake reign as its golden goose.
1. Bret Hart
Bret Hart is hailed as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time. The Hitman has won nearly every major accolade in sports entertainment and was known for his technical prowess and charismatic presence. A major highlight of Bret Hart’s career was his victories in the King of the Ring Tournament in 1991 and 1993 with Hart being the only two-time winner so far.
Bret’s first win solidified his status as a major star, while his second win in 1993 further revolutionized the industry by highlighting technical wrestling and helping Hart ascend to the top of the mountain.
