Cody Rhodes has been overshadowed by The Tribal Chief since his return

Cody Rhodes successfully defended his WWE Undisputed Championship against the leader of the new Bloodline, Solo Sikoa, in a steel cage match in the SmackDown premiere episode on the USA Network.

In the same episode, we learned that Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu will be going against Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns in a tag team match at Bad Blood.

However, it seems that it’s high time now for Cody Rhodes to leave behind the shadow of the never-ending Bloodline saga and focus on his own story. Here are five strong reasons why:

Family business

Firstly, and most importantly it’s not his family. Roman Reigns said in the premiere episode of SmackDown that what’s going on between the Bloodline is “family business,” and he certainly doesn’t need Cody’s help against the Bloodline, which makes it all the more confusing why we’re getting the tag team matches at Bad Blood.

But what Roman Reigns says is spot on; Cody Rhodes doesn’t need to be involved in the Bloodline’s business and be the savior of SmackDown because it takes away from the importance of having him as the Undisputed Champion. The entire focus is always on who the real Tribal Chief is, making the Ula Fala the most important prize on SmackDown, not the WWE Undisputed Championship.

A side-kick in his own story

The second reason is, in itself, an extension of the first reason. Cody Rhodes, who is the face of the company, was facing Solo Sikoa at SummerSlam, but it was never about him.

Nobody was into the match; everybody was waiting for the return of Roman Reigns. The same thing happened at the SmackDown premiere on the USA Network when Cody Rhodes was getting beat up by the new Bloodline; we were just waiting for Roman Reigns to make the save.

So, if you understand the pattern, Cody Rhodes being involved in the story with the Bloodline makes him look like a side character in his own story, which doesn’t look well if that guy is the face of your company.

A repetitive story

Thirdly, the repetitive nature of the storyline is a major concern. Cody Rhodes vs. the Bloodline is a really long and engaging story in itself, but we got the fairytale ending at WrestleMania 40, and thereafter, when we once again see Cody Rhodes engage with this new version of the Bloodline, it makes for a really repetitive and boring program.

Solo Sikoa might have stepped up, but he doesn’t have Roman Reigns’ or The Rock’s aura, and Cody Rhodes cutting the same promo every week, calling Solo Sikoa a wannabe, and then the same numbers game attack on Cody Rhodes before a face tag team comes out to even the odds, we’ve seen that for a while now, and it’s not working. So, maybe he takes some time away from the Bloodline and has important rivalries outside of them.

Great expectations

Fourthly, there are high expectations for Cody Rhodes’ title reign. Cody Rhodes winning the title at WrestleMania 40, dethroning Roman Reigns, who was having the longest world title reign in the modern era, was a massive moment in the company.

There are only a few that can compare to this, and after that, fans’ expectations were huge, and WWE hasn’t been able to deliver on it so far.

Fans were expecting dream matches against Randy Orton, CM Punk, The Rock, Gunther, and John Cena, but what we got were great matches without any strong story built against the likes of AJ Styles, Logan Paul, and Kevin Owens.

The only proper story that we’ve had so far in this title reign was the one against the new Bloodline, which is exactly the problem. This is his story, and it still is about the Bloodline and not him. And while we do understand that WWE might be saving the marquee matches for the future, it might be time to pull the trigger on a few, as it has really started to hurt his title reign.

Fans Might Turn On Him

Lastly, fans might turn on him. Cody Rhodes, despite having a mediocre championship reign so far, is still very popular among the fans. They still love and cheer for him and sing his theme song, but now that Roman Reigns is back in the picture and in the blue brand, fans might turn on him soon.

Just last week, if you compare the fans’ reactions between when Roman said it’s his WWE vs. when Cody Rhodes said it used to be Roman’s but now it belongs to him, you’ll understand that fans are way more excited and high on Roman Reigns, and so, if he stays involved in this rivalry anymore, fans might just turn on him sooner than later.

All of this also has to do with the fact that they get to see Cody Rhodes every week, and he is that Captain America-styled good guy, while they rarely see Roman Reigns, whose character is more of a badass. So, this might hurt Cody Rhodes in the long term, as even though it’s understandable that Cody Rhodes needs to stay somewhat involved with the Bloodline to build his storyline with The Rock for next year’s WrestleMania, WWE should still remove him from the picture at least for now.
