Finn Balor has been on a downward trajectory for a while compared to his stature

Finn Balor had all the tools to become a top guy in WWE. However, as fate would have it, all those talents have failed to materialize into a successful career in the company. Although there have been many false dawns, the larger picture is that the Judgement Day member’s run on the main roster has been lackluster.

Here, we take a look at what’s gone wrong with Finn Balor’s WWE career.

5. Injury at the wrong place at the wrong time

Finn Balor remarkably became the first-ever WWE Universal champion by beating Seth Rollins at the 2016 SummerSlam event. However, as luck would have it, he suffered from a dislocated right shoulder during the match and was forced to relinquish the strap the very next time.

The former NJPW wrestler’s monumental win seemed like he was destined for a major push. But the injury couldn’t have come at a more wrong time than it did. What’s surprising is that Balor was never elevated to the top level after that. Sometimes it makes you wonder what would have been his career trajectory on the main roster were it not for the untimely injury setback.

4. WWE has failed to utilize Balor on the main roster effectively

Finn Balor has languished in the mid-card for far too long, with occasional forays into the main event. A superstar of his pedigree deserves much more than that.

That’s where it seems that WWE has failed to utilize the veteran grappler effectively. In an ideal world, Balor should have featured in the top feuds on the main roster much more than he has actually done. This brings us to our next point.

3. Lack of faith in Balor from the top management

There is a reason why Finn Balor lost even to the likes of washed-up superstars like Edge. That could have simply been due to a lack of faith from the higher-ups in the Irish grappler. This is more apparent by no effort on the part of the Stamford-based promotion to push him as a top guy.

Instead, the powers that be in WWE were okay to see Balor contend in the mid-card or sometimes in the under-card as well. A performer’s job in the wrestling world is to be a diligent professional and not question the direction of their character. However, a promotion’s planning for a wrestler goes a long way in deciding their fate. It’s safe to say that in Balor’s case, there wasn’t much.

2. Remained in the shadows of Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley in the Judgement Day

WWE decided to finally add Balor to a consequential storyline by making him a member of The Judgement Day faction in 2022. However, he was comfortably overshadowed by the much more appealing Damian Priest and Rhea Ripley, who deservedly hogged all the spotlight.

The two-time Intercontinental champion was forced to take a backseat as even Dominik Mysterio gained more popularity than him. Now that the wrestling juggernaut has split up the stable, it remains to be seen whether Balor gets some more credit for his exploits.

1. The Irish performer does not connect with the audience like a main eventer should

Image is an important part of the wrestling business. How the fans perceive a wrestler is directly proportional to the amount of push they receive. Granted, the top management also plays an important part in the rise of a grappler, but there have been many instances wherein a fan outcry has forced WWE to alter their storylines. What hasn’t worked for Finn Balor is he has never been seen as a top attraction by the audience on the main roster. Hence, it has become all the more difficult for him to have a sustained successful run in the big leagues.

Regardless of a lack of push on the main roster, Finn Balor is a certified legend in the wrestling business, owing to the journeyman career he has had over the years. Granted, his main roster WWE career failed to reach the heights previously imagined. But he has proved to be a reliable performer for his employers for almost a decade.
