Seth Rollins was the special guest referee for the mega clash

At SummerSlam, CM Punk faced Drew McIntyre one-on-one, with Seth “Freakin” Rollins serving as Special Guest Referee. Punk’s return to WWE did not sit well with McIntyre or Rollins. When Punk was wounded in the 2024 Royal Rumble Match, McIntyre said he wished for it to happen and taunted The Second City Saint for being out of action. His deeds, however, would result in repercussions.

At WrestleMania XL, Punk served as a guest commentator for McIntyre’s World Heavyweight Championship match against Seth Rollins. After Drew won the championship, a post-match brawl between him and Punk helped cut McIntyre’s reign short, paving the way for Damian Priest to cash in his Money in the Bank contract and defeat McIntyre to become the next World Heavyweight Champion.

Punk attacked again the following Monday night, costing McIntyre a championship shot in a No. 1 Contender’s Match on Raw, and also interfering in McIntyre’s World Heavyweight Championship match against Priest at WWE Clash at the Castle.

An enraged McIntyre responded by claiming to quit WWE before unleashing a violent beatdown on SmackDown, taking a bracelet representing Punk’s love for his wife and dog in the process.

McIntyre won the Money in the Bank Ladder contest and entered the World Heavyweight Title Match against Priest and Rollins on the same night, but Punk cost him the contest once more. Rollins was enraged with Punk in the aftermath, claiming that Punk’s hostility against McIntyre lost him a chance to win the championship.

Drew McIntyre won the grudge match against CM Punk

In an electrifying match at SummerSlam 2024, Drew McIntyre faced off against CM Punk, with Seth Rollins serving as the special guest referee. From the very start, Rollins made his presence felt by giving extended instructions to both competitors before calling for the bell.

The match started with a flurry of punches reminiscent of Frye/Takayama, as McIntyre threw Punk into the corner. Punk quickly countered with a barrage of punches and kicks, but Rollins pulled him away, leading to a heated argument. Taking advantage of the distraction, McIntyre hit Punk with a shot and returned the favor, stomping him in the corner until Rollins intervened again.

As the action continued, Punk delivered a boot and a falling lariat, only to be met with a double thrust from McIntyre. The fight spilt to the floor, with Punk smashing McIntyre’s face into the steel steps repeatedly while Rollins nonchalantly tied his shoes and laughed. McIntyre recovered, catapulting Punk into the frame of the ring.

Back inside, McIntyre pressed his advantage with a big slap across Punk’s face, but Punk retaliated with a back fist and a knee to the gut. McIntyre caught Punk’s rising knee and powerbombed him, earning a quick one count. McIntyre then grabbed a chair, intending to use it, but Rollins took it away and admonished him.

McIntyre pulled out a bracelet, preparing for a countdown, but Punk met him with a sick kick, followed by a swinging neckbreaker. Punk climbed to the top rope and delivered a diving elbow drop, coming close to victory. He then locked in the Anaconda Vise but got distracted by McIntyre’s bracelet.

Reclaiming the bracelet, Punk stood up only to walk into a Claymore from McIntyre. Even Rollins was surprised when it resulted in a nearfall. Drew attempted the Future Shock DDT, but Punk reversed it, sending McIntyre hard into the post. As Punk confronted Rollins, McIntyre hit him with a northern lariat. Punk countered a Future Shock attempt with a Go to Sleep, but there was no referee to count the pin.

Rollins slid in late, but it was still not enough for the pin. Frustrated, Rollins and Punk exchanged words, with Rollins reminding Punk that it wasn’t all about him. Punk retaliated with a Go to Sleep on Rollins, declaring it may not always be about him, but it’s never about Rollins.

Turning back to McIntyre, Punk was hit with a low blow, followed by a Claymore. As Rollins regained consciousness and rolled into the cover, he counted the pinfall. Drew McIntyre emerged victorious, winning by pinfall with a Claymore.
