List of all Afghanistan cricketers to feature in the IPL
A total of eight Afghanistan cricketers have been part of the IPL so far.
Afghanistan are one of the fastest-growing teams in international cricket. Over the years, they have produced many big superstars, and Rashid Khan is leading the way. Most of these players have played the game across the world and have also taken part in various franchise leagues, including the Indian Premier League (IPL).
A number of Afghanistan stars have featured in the IPL. Every season, we see a few Afghanistan players taking part in the IPL, and the numbers are growing season-by-season. On that note, we will talk about all those Afghanistan cricketers who have been part of the IPL until now.
Here is the List of all Afghanistan cricketers to feature in the IPL
1. Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan was one of the first few Afghanistan players to feature in the Indian Premier League. The star leg-spinner got his first IPL contract in 2017 from Sunrisers Hyderabad, and since then, he has delivered many match-winning performances over the seasons. Rashid is one of the leading overseas cricketers in the tournament. He played for SRH until 2021 and is now playing for Gujarat Titans.
2. Mohammad Nabi
Famously known as “President,” Mohammad Nabi also got his maiden IPL contract in 2017 with Sunrisers Hyderabad. He played with SRH until 2021 and then was part of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2022. Now he is representing Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2024. Nabi has always been a true contributor, whether for Afghanistan or in the IPL. Infact, Nabi was the first ever Afghanistan cricketer to get sold in an IPL auction.
3. Mujeeb Ur Rahman
Mujeeb Ur Rahman is another Afghanistan spinner who has played in the Indian Premier League. He has featured in three IPL seasons. His first season was in 2018 for Punjab Kings, and he played until 2020. Overall, he has played 19 games and taken 19 wickets at an economy rate of 8.18. He was bought by KKR at the IPL 2024 auction, but he had to miss the entire season due to an injury.
4. Noor Ahmad
Afghanistan have produced many spinners, and Noor Ahmad is one of them. The teenager made his IPL debut in 2022 for Gujarat Titans at the age of just 17. He did well in his first season and helped his team win the title in his maiden season. Noor has grown as a cricketer since then, and his IPL performances helped him get his international chance.
5. Rahmanullah Gurbaz
Rahmanullah Gurbaz has been a consistent performer for Afghanistan for the last couple of years at the international level. His consistent performances helped him get his maiden IPL contract in 2022 for Gujarat Titans as a replacement. However, he didn’t play a game and was released later on. In 2023, he was traded to Kolkata Knight Riders from GT and he has been a part of the side since then.
6. Azmatullah Omarzai
The last year has been brilliant for the Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai, who had a great ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with the bat and ball, which helped him get his maiden IPL contract. Gujarat Titans bought the all-rounder for a price of INR 50 lakh at the IPL 2024 auction, and he made his debut in the first game for his team in the tournament.
7. Allah Ghazanfar
Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb ur Rahman was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders at the IPL 2024 auction. However, he was ruled out of the competition, and the franchise picked 16-year-old Allah Ghazanfar from Afghanistan as his replacement. The 16-year-old became yet another player from his country to feature in the IPL. He has played two ODIs in his career. He has also played some franchise cricket.
8. Gulbadin Naib
Gulbadin Naib is not a new face on the Afghanistan cricket team. He has been involved in international cricket for more than a decade now. Naib made his international debut in 2011 and has been in and out of the team. However, he has done well in the last six months in T20 internationals, which helped him get his maiden IPL contract. Delhi Capitals signed him for a price of INR 50 lakh as Mitchell Marsh’s replacement for IPL 2024, and he became the latest Afghanistan star to feature in the IPL.
