IPL 2024: How can MI qualify for playoffs despite losing to DC in match No. 43
Mumbai Indians (MI) have won only three matches out of nine played so far in the IPL 2024.
The ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 has been a high-scoring tournament, and a number of games have seen both teams score well over 200 runs. On Saturday, Punjab Kings (PBKS) chased down the highest T20 score of 262. Another high-scoring clash was played on Saturday at the Arun Jaitley Stadium when Delhi Capitals (DC) locked horns with Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match No. 43 of the tournament.
It was yet another game with a match aggregate of over 500 runs. Batting first, DC ended up scoring their highest IPL total of 257/4 in 20 overs. MI also tried hard but fell short of the target by just 10 runs and scored 247/9. It was the sixth defeat for MI this season. They have only won three games out of nine, and with six points, they are at ninth spot on the IPL 2024 points table.
IPL 2024: Here’s how MI can still qualify for the playoffs
The five-time champions made it to the playoffs last season and finished third overall. They started their campaign in the ongoing tournament with a new captain in Hardik Pandya, but they haven’t been successful yet in the tournament. Mostly people would consider them out of the playoffs race with only six points after nine games. But, they still have a chance to qualify for the playoffs.
Anything is possible in cricket and especially in tournaments like the IPL. MI, who currently are placed at ninth position with six points and NRR of -0.261, have five more games to play. They will play two games each against Kolkata Knight Riders and Lucknow Super Giants and one against Sunrisers Hyderabad. All of these teams are currently in the top four positions.
If Mumbai manage to win all of their next five matches, they will earn 10 points and end the league stage with 16 points. As seen in the past years in the tournament, 16 points are enough for teams to make it to the playoffs. However, there have also been instances of teams missing out from playoffs despite having 16 points due to lesser NRR than other teams who are tied. So, Mumbai need to make sure that they not only win the remaining five games, but also with a huge margin to improve their NRR.
