Athletics garnered the most number of medals.

The Indian contingent concluded their outstanding performance at the Asian Para Games 2023 with a remarkable 111 medals – comprising 29 gold, 31 silver, and 51 bronze, securing a 5th-place finish. India’s achievement of breaching the 100-medal mark for the first time places them among the elite, becoming the 7th nation to achieve this milestone.

In the first three editions of the Asian Para Games, India amassed a total of 116 medals (14 in 2010, 33 in 2014, 72 in 2018). However, in the current 4th edition, India’s tally of 111 medals fell just five short of the combined total of the previous editions.

The remarkable journey began with a strong showing in athletics, where India clinched five gold medals on the first day and closed with two gold medals in chess. Athletics accounted for nearly 50 percent of India’s medals, with Indian athletes winning 55 medals, including 18 gold. Badminton was the second-best sport, with 21 medals (4 gold, 4 silver, and 13 bronze), a significant improvement from the previous edition’s nine medals (3 gold and 6 bronze).

Archery also showed substantial progress, with seven medals (two gold, three silver, and four bronze), compared to a sole gold in 2018.

India’s medal tally extended to 12 different sports in this edition, showcasing their broadening prowess. The new sports in which India medaled this time are Para canoeing, Judo, Rowing, and Taekwondo, marking a significant diversification.

However, cycling proved to be a challenge, as India failed to secure a medal in this discipline. Swimming, which had been a strong suit in the past, experienced a downturn this time, with just one bronze medal, credited to Suyash Jadhav, compared to the eight medals (1 gold, 2 silver, and 5 bronze) in the previous edition.
