Top 6 big names who are missing from Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads
Duleep Trophy 2024-25 will get underway on September 5 and will be competed among four teams.
The Indian Cricket Team players are currently on a rare month-long break since finishing the ODI series against Sri Lanka. On Wednesday, the BCCI announced squads for the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024-25, and they include a spate of Indian stars.
This tournament will have four teams: India A, B, C, and D. It will kick off on September 5.
A few big names were missing from the squads despite their ongoing lengthy break. Fans were hoping that all the Indian players would play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy 2024-25, but the BCCI has decided to give rest to some senior players.
We will see the likes of KL Rahul, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohammed Siraj, and Kuldeep Yadav in action in the first round of the Duleep Trophy, which will precede the Bangladesh test series.
Here, we will talk about six big names who are missing from Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads.
Top 6 big names who are missing from Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads
1. Rohit Sharma
The Indian test and ODI captain, Rohit Sharma, is not part of the announced squads, which is not a surprise as there is a long test season coming up for India, and Rohit’s role as captain and batsman is immense. India have given him the rest so that he can be fresh for the test series against Bangladesh, New Zealand, and Australia.
2. Virat Kohli
Like Rohit Sharma, senior batsman Virat Kohli has also been given a rest from the Duleep Trophy. Virat’s experience is crucial, and the BCCI selectors want him to be mentally fresh for the upcoming assignments. Apart from three test series, India will play an ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
3. Ravichandran Ashwin
Veteran off-spinner R Ashwin recently had a superb TNPL 2024 where he led his team to the title. Ashwin generally plays this tournament every year, but has been rested from the Duleep Trophy 2024-25. It looks like India want their premier spinner to be fit for the coming ten tests in the next few months.
4. Mohammed Shami
Veteran Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has been out of action since the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final in November last year. He suffered an ankle injury and underwent surgery in February. He is currently going through his rehab and has started bowling in nets. Hence, India don’t want to rush him back into action. He is likely to feature directly in the home test series against Bangladesh.
5. Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah is a player that India want to use carefully and only in important matches and series. Bumrah has been on rest since helping India lift the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 trophy. His rest has been extended and is expected to make a comeback against Bangladesh in the test series.
6. Sanju Samson
Star wicket-keeper Sanju Samson has been dropped from the Duleep Trophy 2024-25 squads. It is a surprise because Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan, Dhurv Jurel, KS Bharat and Abishek Porel are picked as wicket-keepers for this competition. It seems the BCCI isn’t looking at Samson as test wicket-keeper, which could be the reason that he is not part of the first round of Duleep Trophy 2024-25.
