England won the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 under white-ball coach Matthew Mott.

In a significant development, the England Cricket Board (ECB) might part ways with the current white-ball head coach Matthew Mott after England failed to defend T20 World Cup earlier this year. Meanwhile, wicket-keeper batter Jos Butter is most likely to retain his place as the white-ball captain, according to reports.

After losing the semi-final match against the Indian cricket team in the T20 World Cup 2024, ECB managing director Rob Key said that a performance review will take place in the coming weeks for the English side.

ECB all set to remove white-ball head coach Matthew Mott

Current white-ball head coach Matthew Mott was under a lot of pressure after England failed to defend their ICC white-ball titles in the last two global events.

The English side’s defence of both ODI and T20 World Cups ended on a disappointing note. At the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, the Three Lions had a disastrous campaign in India, where they failed to reach the semi-finals. However, England reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024, but lost the match against India.

According to a latest report in The Telegraph, ECB are all set to part ways with white-ball head coach Mott in the coming weeks. The report further added that Mott will leave the team following the review, which was conducted recently by ECB managing director Rob Key.

Mott was appointed as England white-ball head coach in May 2022. Under him, England lifted the T20 World Cup 2022 title in Australia. Mott, who had a four-year contract, might leave the English side just after two years.

Jos Buttler to retain his white-ball captaincy

The Telegraph report further added that Buttler is set to retain white-ball captaincy, and will overlook the transition phase of the England side in white-ball formats.

The report further explained that legendary Kumar Sangakkara, who is the director of cricket of the Indian Premier League franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR), could be a potential candidate. However, the final decision will be taken by the ECB if they allow an IPL coach or not. Interestingly, Sangakkara has worked with Buttler at RR in the IPL.
