Gautam Gambhir reveals reason behind still doing cricket commentary and playing in T20 leagues
Gautam Gambhir announced his retirement from international cricket way back in 2018.
Gautam Gambhir needs no introduction to the game of cricket. He is one of the best openers that India produced across formats and has won a number of games for India combined in all three formats. Gambhir made his debut for India in 2003 in an ODI game and played until 2016. In his career, he played 58 tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is.
Gautam Gambhir scored 4154 tests, 5238 ODIs, and 932 T20I runs, including 20 international centuries. The southpaw announced his retirement in 2018. However, Gambhir’s major contribution was in the finals of the T20 World Cup 2007 and the ODI World Cup 2011. He played two important knocks in the finals, which helped the team win the ICC titles.
Gautam Gambhir on why he is playing in T20 leagues and doing commentary
Notably, Gautam Gambhir stated in one of his old interviews that he would not be playing in leagues after his retirement. But the southpaw has been seen playing in different leagues and also doing commentary in the IPL and at the international level. He is also an active MP (Member of Parliament) of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP). Recently, he opened up about the reason for doing commentary and playing in other leagues.
In a recent interview on a podcast, Gambhir revealed that he has five kitchens running in Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar, which are feeding 5000 needy people on a monthly basis. He added that the average cost of one kitchen, including transportation, is 5 lakhs, and for five kitchens, it is 30 lakhs, which comes around INR 3.6 crore. That is the reason he is frequently involved in cricket-related jobs.

Gambhir said, “I don’t like to do commentary and play league cricket at this age. But the 3.6 crore I am spending monthly to feed 5000 people through my five kitchens which is totally from my pocket.” The former opener also said that he feels satisfied after feeding so many people. Recently, he was seen playing in the Legends League Cricket 2023. He is also part of the commentary panel in the ongoing India’s tour of South Africa.
