Ravi Ashwin scored 15 runs and picked two wickets in the game.

In a hilarious turn of events, senior Indian off-spinner Ravi Ashwin received a run out warning at the non-striker’s end during the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) match on July 28 in Dindigul.

In the past, the veteran cricketer Ravi Ashwin was very vocal about run outs at non-striker’s end. Ashwin feels that bowlers are unduly pressured to maintain the spirit of cricket, whereas batters often have an advantage by stepping out of the crease before a bowler releases the ball at the non-striker’s end.

Ravi Ashwin gets warned by the bowler for leaving the crease early

A hilarious incident occurred during the ongoing Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2024 match between Nellai Royal Kings and Dindigul Dragons.

Ashwin, who is playing for Dindigul Dragons, was at the non-striker’s end during the 15th over of the first innings when Nellai Royal Kings left-arm spinner Mohan Prasath came into the attack.

During the second ball of the over, Ashwin stepped out early from the non-striker’s end, and spinner Mohan Prasasth noticed it and halted his delivery stride.

The left-arm spinner quickly halted his run-up and warned Ashwin to return back to the crease. The replay showed that Dindigul Dragons batter Ashwin had his bat on the crease, which saved him from being run out at the non-striker’s end.

Here is the viral video:

In the match, Dindigul Dragons were bowled out for 136 runs with Ashwin scoring 15 runs. Shivam Singh’s crucial knock of 70 runs helped the Dragons reach a respectable total.

In response, Nellai Royal Kings chased down 137 in 17.5 overs, clinching a four-wicket victory over Dragons. Dindigul Dragons have already qualified for the playoffs, and they will play Eliminator match against Chepauk Super Gillies on August 1.

“No rule broken,” Ravi Ashwin reacts to getting warned at non-striker’s end

Following the match, Ashwin opened up on the incident and clarified what he did was well within the rules.

One ‘X’ user tagged Ashwin and asked him why commentators didn’t point out the fact that Ashwin was inside the crease at the non-striker’s end during Prasasth’s delivery stride. To which, Ashwin replied with MCC law 38.3, which states the rule about non-strikers leaving their ground early. The rule states, “At any time from the moment the ball comes into the play until the instant when the bowler would normally have been expected to release the ball, the non-striker is liable to be run out if he/she is out of his/her crease.”
