Barcelona lift UEFA Women's Champions League 2023-24 trophy following 2-0 win over Lyon
Barcelona Women defended their European crown
Barcelona Women have done it. They have been crowned the UEFA Women’s Champions League 2023-24 winners after a tough fight against Olympique Lyonnais. Aitana Bonmati scored the first goal in the 63rd minute, with Alexia Putellas adding the second in added time.
A packed Estadio de San Mamés hosted this 2024 UCL final. All the tickets were reportedly sold out. That means more than 52,000 spectators were present in this game to get a real-time view. This was the third time a Women’s UCL final was hosted in Spain. Previously, the 2010 and 2020 finals were played out in stadiums in Spain.
Jonatan Giráldez was on the sidelines of the Barca Women’s team. He chose a similar 4-3-3 formation to deal with record eight-time winners. Aitana Bonmatí, 2023 Ballon d’Or Féminin winner, who scored the first goal was playing the right central midfielder role at the start of the game.
Lyon on the other hand led by Sonia Bompastor also went with a 4-3-3 setup. Christiane Endler had the task of not allowing the ball to cross the goalline, as she stood in between the sticks.
In the first half, Barca played their way, passes here and there, trying to stay in the final third as much as possible. Lyon couldn’t do much as they watched them hold the maximum of the possession. The first half end saw a 0-0 scoreline as both sets of players entered the tunnel for a short break.

Under the watchful eyes of Rebecca Welch, referee, the game resumed post-halftime break. The game was locked in a stalemate until the 63rd minute. Aitana Bonmatí’s left-footed shot took a deflection to end up in the back of the net finally.
The lead stood still while Lyon tried their best to get back into the game, even in the six added minutes. Nevertheless, it was a failed attempt. Alexia Putellas who had come on as a substitute scored the second for Barca in the added time to seal the deal.
The referee saw a rather cool game as only Wendie Renard received a booking in the second half of the entire game. It is official, Barca Women with a 2-0 winning scoreline against Lyon, added their third UCL title to their history books. On a side note, Alexia Putellas now has 30 trophies to her name with Barca.
