A total of 32 teams will participate in the upcoming edition

The UEFA Champions League, the most important football competition in Europe, is continuously changing. After UEFA accepted the revisions in May 2022, a new format will be used starting from the next season. The competition will also be played on Thursdays apart from Wednesdays and Tuesdays.

This is the first time that Europe’s elite tournament has undergone a major redesign since 1992.Aleksander Ceferin, the head of UEFA, declared that qualifying will be “based on sporting merit”.

32 teams are now divided into eight groups of four for the Champions League group stage, with the leading two sides from each group moving on to the round of 16.

But instead of this structure, there will be a single league table with 36 clubs taking part in the new league phase, providing four additional teams the opportunity to compete.

Instead of playing three teams twice, clubs will now face eight different teams—four at home and four away. Each squad will be selected to face two rivals from each of the four seeding pots once the teams are ranked in order to decide the fixtures.

They will play one home game and one away game against a team from each pot. Under the revised structure, there will be 189 matches instead of 125, bringing in more drama and excitement.

Instead of playing six, each team is going to play no fewer than eight and a maximum of seventeen games. Tuesdays and Wednesdays will continue to remain the days that Champions League games are played during regular weeks.

There will be no other European tournament during the Champions League exclusive weeks, therefore games will take place on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Rather than ending in December, the league phase will now conclude at the end of January.
