Confirmed teams and pots for UEFA Champions League 2024-25

A new format will be introduced for UCL next term
The Swiss model which was a lot talked about in UEFA meetings is finally here. The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League is going to change drastically. No longer will we see the old group stage format.
UEFA Champions League happens to be the finest football tournament out there in Europe. Only the top teams across Europe get a chance to lift the title by the end of the season. This 2023-24 Champions League was the last time we saw the group stage.
The group stage format which had eight groups of four clubs each will now be scrapped. In this format, each side was taking on their respective other three group sides for a home and away fixture. A total of 32 teams were forming the group stage.
With the start of the 2024-25 UCL season, now four more teams will get a chance to compete in the grandest European football tournament. A total of 36 teams will begin the main tournament after the qualifying phase is dealt with. These 36 teams will be ranked in a single league although they won’t be battling every club like in a usual round-robin format.
The new format will include playing eight different clubs in the league phase. Four out of these eight games will be played at home while the rest four will be in the usual away fixture.
The way of determining these eight opponents is as such. There will be four seeding pots. Each club will be drawn against exactly ‘two different opponents of each pot’. This will result in more interesting, competitive battles early on in the tournament.
Then after the league phase is done and dusted, the top eight clubs will directly move to the Round of 16. Sides from the ninth position up to the 24th will have to fight in the knockout playoffs. The final eight from this playoffs will join the Round of 16 stage.
Thereafter it’s the usual stuff, the Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and then the final.
Confirmed 2024-25 Champions League teams so far and the allotted pots
Seven clubs from the qualifying phase will join the league stage draw scheduled for 29 August 2024 at the UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
A very good UEFA coefficient allows Germany and Italy to feature five clubs each in this upcoming edition. From Germany, we have Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart and unbeaten Bundesliga winners Bayer Leverkusen. The Italians will be sending these five: Inter, Bologna, Juventus, Milan and Atalanta. Inter are the winners of the Italian first tier, Serie A.
From English football, after finishing in the top four in the Premier League, we have Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa. The Gunners may have once again failed to beat the Cityzens for the league title but without a doubt, they will want to have a shot at the Champions League title come next season. The Reds also will be featuring in UCL without Jurgen Klopp on the touchline after many years.
A Kylian Mbappe-less Paris Saint-Germain along with AS Monaco and Stade Brestois will represent the Ligue 1 of France. Real Madrid who are competing in this season’s UCL final against Borussia Dortmund already have a place here via LaLiga route. The Spanish league champions will be joined by FC Barcelona, Girona and Atletico Madrid.
