Ralf Rangnick and his team finished top of Group D.
Austria defeated the Netherlands in a thrilling five-goal thriller in Berlin to win Group D and advance to the Euro 2024 knockout stage.
Before their penultimate group match, both countries knew that they would almost certainly advance to the round of 16. While Austria knew that even a defeat would see them qualify in third unless they fell by a five-goal deficit, the Netherlands already knew they would go to the next round – at least as one of the best third-placed teams.
However, both teams wanted to end the Euro 2024 group stage with a win because the top two spots in the group were still up for grabs. Early on, Austria were a far better and more clinical side in the game and had every answer to Netherlands questions and deservingly won the game.
It was least expected for Ralf Rangnick‘s men to finish top of the group which contained France and Poland but football is unpredictable and anything can happen.

Based on Tuesday’s results, the Netherlands advances as one of the top three teams, while France advances as runners-up. In the round of sixteen, Austria could play the current runners-up of Group F, Turkey, while France could play the current runners-up of Group E, Belgium.
The competitors that the Netherlands could face next are not yet known. They might play Spain, the present champions of Group C (England), or Romania, the current winners of Group E.
According to its rules, UEFA assigns each country to a last-16 tie after determining the four best third-place teams. Each of the six groups’ top two teams advances to the round of 16.
Four of the six third-place finishers in the groups will join those twelve sides. The teams that rank third will be organised into a league table, and the top four teams advance to the round of 16.
