OGC Nice had the strongest defense in the French league.

The 2023-24 Ligue 1 season is completed. Paris Saint-Germain clinched the title with 76 points on the league table. They were the highest-scoring side in the division with 81 goals.

Also, a thing to notice is that fifth-placed OGC Nice were the strongest defensive side. They might have scored just 40 odd goals but letting in only 29 goals after 34 league fixtures was an amazing record. Let’s look at Ligue 1 2023-24 Team of the Season.

Formation: 4-3-3

GK: Brice Samba (RC Lens)

Brice Samba is chosen ahead of PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma. Donnarumma may have had a hand in winning the title but he played just 25 league games out of a possible 34. Samba stood like a rock for almost the entire season for RC Lens playing 33 league fixtures. He managed 14 clean sheets and conceded just 35 goals.

RB: Tiago Santos (LOSC Lille)

LOSC Lille had the third-best defensive record in the Ligue 1. Tiago Santos played a crucial part in helping his side finish fourth. The right-back was signed by Portuguese side GD Estoril Praia at the start of the 2023-24 season. Santos played 29 league games in which he even scored once and made two assists in total.

CB: Dante (OGC Nice)

Former Bayern Munich centre-back played a crucial role in making his side preserve the best defense in the division. Dante may be 40 but the captain has shined brightly, leading from the back. He has made 32 league appearances for OGC Nice this season.

CB: Marquinhos (PSG)

We have gone with Marquinhos from Paris Saint-Germain to complete a Brazilian centre-back pairing. The 30-year-old was restricted to just 21 appearances in Ligue 1 mostly due to injury setbacks. The player has been a part of the first team since joining back in 2013.

LB: Lucas Hernández (PSG)

Lucas Hernández was one of the new faces in the PSG lineup at the start of the season. He moved in after leaving Bayern Munich last summer. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner with the France national football team played an important part in 27 Ligue 1 games.

CM: Vitinha (PSG)

Midfield is a very crucial part of a dominating team. PSG dominated the league season more so because of a reliable midfield. Vitinha displayed good performances throughout the season making 28 appearances that produced seven goals and four assists.

That is a good enough reason for the Portugal national football team’s head coach Roberto Martínez to choose him for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024.

CM: Pierre Lees-Melou (Stade Brestois 29)

Stade Brestois 29 finished third this league season. A certain 30-year-old was at the heart of the midfield dynamics for his side. Pierre Lees-Melou is more likely to play a deeper role here. He had a lively season in that role.

CM: Warren Zaïre-Emery (PSG)

The winner of the Trophées UNFP Du football Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year surely gets his name on the Ligue 1 2023-24 Team of the Season. Warren Zaïre-Emery wasn’t even 18 two months back but was a regular in the PSG’s squad. The teenage sensation made 26 appearances with three assists and two goals.

FW: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Marseille)

Two former Arsenal forwards were seen rocking the French first tier this season. Alexandre Lacazette did his bit for Olympique Lyon while Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was shining in the kits of Marseille. Aubameyang is chosen to feature in our attack line. The 34-year-old forward scored a whopping 17 goals along with eight assists.

FW: Jonathan David (LOSC Lille)

Jonathan David couldn’t keep pace with the high-scoring Kylian Mbappé but did manage to finish second in the division. David scored 19 goals having played a part in every league game possible for LOSC Lille. The Canadian International is still 24 and can try to go even further next season.

FW: Kylian Mbappé (PSG)

“You all know it already.” was Kylian Mbappé’s mother’s words after she was quizzed regarding his son’s next destination. Mbappé played his final season with PSG and is more than likely to be announced by Real Madrid as a signing after their UEFA Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund. Mbappé scored a whopping 27 goals. That’s eight more goals than the second-best forward in the Ligue 1.
