The 35-year-old is not looking to leave football in Europe just yet

Mats Hummels has actively expressed his thoughts of late. The Borussia Dortmund defender commented about getting left out of the Euro 2024 squad of the host nation, Germany and what the future holds.

Talking to BILD, a German newspaper outlet, Hummels said: “It’s bitter for me as an individual because I’m currently one of the five best defenders in Germany,”. He further added, “I have the self-confidence to say that.”

For those of you who need the plot to understand it, here it goes. Basically, the centre-back is talking about not getting picked up for the provisional squad (and eventually the final squad) for the Euro 2024 tournament by the Germany national football team.

The player’s confidence can be backed by the fact that in a few days, he will be playing the UEFA Champions League final against Real Madrid. That’s the biggest competition in European club football against the serial winners of the competition.

When asked what the reason for the omission could be, the player replied, “If I understood him (Nagelsmann) correctly, It was more about age-related issues like fitness. If I’d had a phase like the one I had recently before March, maybe I would have been called up for the European Championship squad as well.”

The 35-year-old defender is also aware that his contract is set to expire, much like Marco Reus. Reus has already let the world know that he won’t be renewing with Dortmund. But in the case of Hummels, his future isn’t thought out yet.

After being quizzed about his future, the goal scorer of the UCL semi-final second-leg win against Paris Saint Germain mentioned: “There are 3 options: BVB, retirement or another club”. He further added, “Retirement is currently the least likely option”.

The player also went out of his way to say that things in Europe aren’t ending just yet, “USA are out of the question for me. If I move, I would stay in Europe for sure”.

Currently, the 2014 FIFA World Cup winning defender (with Germany) is focused on the job ahead, the UCL finals. Only after the Wembley Stadium showdown has been taken care of, Hummels will give a thought about his future.
