Giants have the upper hand against Puneri in the Pro Kabaddi League.

Puneri Paltan have started the Pro Kabaddi League 2024 (PKL 11) on the same note they finished the previous one. The defending champions of the league have three wins and a draw from the first five games. Their only loss came at the hands of table-toppers Tamil Thalaivas 30-35. With 19 points from five games, they sit second in the league table, with Tamil Thalaivas being at the top on account of a greater score difference.

Puneri Paltan have the best defensive unit in the league. They rank at the top for team average tackle points, team successful tackle percentage, and team successful tackles. Defenders like Gaurav Khatri and Aman have stood out whereas others like Abinesh Nadaranjan and Mohit Goyat have chipped in when the team has struggled. Gaurav Khatri and Aman are in the top 10 for defenders with the most tackle points in the league this season.

In the raiding department, all-rounders and raiders have combined well to score points. Aslam Inamdar, Mohit Goyat, and Pankaj Mohite have been the go-to names when it comes to raiding for the defending champions. The team, like the previous seasons, have relied on the all-rounders to do the trick for them.

On the other hand, Gujarat Giants sit in the second-last place on the league table with just seven points from four games. They won their first game against Bengaluru Bulls, but since then have lost three matches on the trot against U Mumba, UP Yoddhas, and Tamil Thalaivas.

Nothing seems to be working for the Giants as they lie last on the list of teams with the highest successful raids percentage for the season and are fifth for teams with the highest successful tackles percentage. The gap between Gujarat and Puneri (the top-ranked team) for the successful tackles percentage is huge.

The team that looked like the side with the best raiding options on the mat is yet to register a Super 10. The trio of Parteek Dahiya, Guman Singh, and Rakesh Sungroya have failed, with each averaging less than five points from raids per match. The defence doesn’t seem too strong as well as the likes of Sombir, Jitender Yadav and Rohit have struggled for consistency.

Puneri Paltan vs Gujarat Giants: Head-to-Head record:

Matches: 14

Puneri Paltan: 5

Gujarat Giants: 8

Tie: 1

The Giants have enjoyed an upper hand in the dual between the two teams. However, it would be difficult to see that happening this season given the poor run of results from the Giants and the stellar form that the Paltans are in. The two sides haven’t played each other in the knockout stage of the tournament yet.
