Jannik Sinner will begin his China Open 2024 title defence against Nicolas Jarry.

Jannik Sinner announced his arrival at China Open 2024 with thunderous groundstrokes. He shared one of his intense practice sessions on the hardcourts of Beijing Olympic Green Tennis Center. The defending champion will be playing his first match in a month as he was on a break after winning US Open 2024. He will be making his second appearance in Beijing.

Sinner looks to be the favourite to lift the title in China Open 2024 and his practice sessions certainly reflect his hunger on the court. The Italian was also seen perfecting his strokes against rival Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany. The pair had never played against each other on the ATP tour until the 2024 season which saw three meetings take place on clay, hard and grass courts.

The German is yet to win a match against Sinner and exchanged fiery groundstrokes during their practice sessions. It started with groundstrokes being hit from the baseline and slowly transformed into volleys from the net. Struff will hopefully set up a fourth meeting against Sinner in Beijing. The pair could meet in the fourth round as both players only need to win one match to set up a battle.

Jannik Sinner chasing history in China Open 2024

Sinner is looking to be the third player on the ATP tour to secure multiple victories in the China Open. He could also become the first player to defend his title in the event since Novak Djokovic in 2015. Djokovic will not compete this time and has not featured in the event since 2015. He and Alexander Zverev are the only players in the top five to be absent in the tournament.

Djokovic became the first player to win multiple titles in 2010 when he successfully defended the crown. He went on to win four consecutive titles from 2012 to 2015. Rafael Nadal in 2017 became the second player to lift the trophy twice in the China Open as his first win had come in 2005. Sinner could next join the list if he registers successive wins in the coming days.

Sinner has already recorded his best performance yet this year and will look to further set new career milestones. He became the first player to win more than five titles this season as he won his sixth title in Flushing Meadows last month. Sinner also became the second player after Zverev to secure more than 50 wins this season.
