India added seven medals to its tally on Day 8
India enjoyed another productive day at the Asian Games 2026 on Sunday, adding seven medals to its tally. The haul included five medals from athletics and two silver medals from squash, taking India’s overall medal count to 37.
Ancy Sojan Edappilly and Sarvesh Kushare won silver medals in athletics, while Tejaswin Shankar, Harita Bhadra and Parul Chaudhary secured bronze. Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh also finished with silver medals in the men’s and women’s squash singles respectively.

India’s athletics contingent produced five medals on the day. Ancy Sojan Edappilly won silver in the women’s long jump with a best effort of 6.53m, while Shaili Singh finished fourth with 6.42m.
Sarvesh Kushare also claimed silver in the men’s high jump after clearing 2.25m, with Aadarsh Ram finishing 13th with 2.05m.
Tejaswin Shankar secured bronze in the men’s decathlon with 7,934 points. Japan’s Yuma Maruyama won gold with 8,123 points and China’s Chen Xinghua took silver with 8,012. Thowfeeq Noushad did not finish the competition.
Harita Bhadra added another bronze in the women’s 200m with a personal best of 23.20 seconds, while Unnathi Bolland finished sixth in 23.46 seconds.
Parul Chaudhary completed India’s athletics medal haul with bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. She clocked a personal best of 9:08.67, while Ankita finished fourth with another personal best of 9:19.24.
Several other Indian athletes progressed through the athletics programme. Murali Sreeshankar and David Solomon Patturaj qualified for the men’s long jump final with 7.84m and 7.62m respectively.
Santhosh Kumar Tamilarasan qualified for the men’s 400m hurdles final in 49.61 seconds, while Vithya Ramraj progressed to the women’s final with 55.73 seconds.
Animesh Kujur finished fifth in the men’s 200m final in 20.80 seconds, while Nandhini Kongan was sixth in the women’s 100m hurdles in 13.45 seconds.
Mohammed Afsal progressed to the men’s 800m final with 1:47.37, while Krishan Kumar finished third in his heat in 1:50.38.
India’s women’s 4x100m relay team also qualified for the final with a season-best 43.65 seconds. Manju Rani finished sixth in the women’s marathon race walk in 3:40:17, while Priyanka was disqualified.
In squash, Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh both won silver medals after losing their respective singles finals to Malaysia’s Ng Eain Yow and Sivasangari Subramaniam.
Abhay went down 9-11, 5-11, 5-11, while Anahat lost 4-11, 4-11, 7-11. The two results gave India its first individual singles silver medals in squash at the Asian Games.
Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur finished ninth in the women’s 69kg category after registering a combined lift of 204kg, with 94kg in the snatch and 110kg in the clean and jerk.
Badminton’s individual medal hopes also ended on Sunday. PV Sindhu lost 11-21, 21-18, 21-10 to China’s Chen Yufei, while Unnati Hooda went down 16-21, 21-14, 17-21 to Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi. Treesa Jolly–Gayatri Gopichand and Dhruv Kapila-Tanisha Crasto also lost their respective quarter-finals.
India’s archers had a successful day, with the men’s and women’s compound and recurve teams reaching the semifinals. The mixed recurve and compound teams also progressed to the last four.
Boxing also produced three medal assurances from four Indian quarter-finalists. Ankush Panghal, Parveen Hooda and Narender Berwal advanced to the semi-finals with at least bronze assured. Sachin Siwach, however, lost 4-1 to Japan’s Shunsuke Kitamoto in the men’s 60kg quarter-final and bowed out.
In volleyball, India defeated Vietnam 3-0 in their opening Pool C match, winning 25-23, 25-21 and 25-20. India also featured across shooting, fencing, sailing, surfing, equestrian, sepak takraw, kurash and hockey during the day.
Asian Games 2026: Updated Indian medal tally after 27th September

India now have 37 medals – 4 gold, 16 silver and 17 bronze and are placed 12th in the overall standings.
Athletics is India’s biggest contributor with 13 medals, comprising six silver and seven bronze. Shooting has contributed 11 medals, while squash has three.
Kabaddi has given India two gold medals, while cricket, badminton, mixed martial arts, rowing, soft tennis, table tennis, weightlifting and wushu have each contributed one medal.

What to expect from the Indian contingent on 28th September?
Monday will bring another packed schedule, with athletics offering several medal opportunities. The programme includes the women’s discus throw, women’s and men’s 400m hurdles, men’s 3000m steeplechase, men’s long jump, men’s 1500m, men’s javelin throw and women’s 5000m finals.
The women’s 800m heats, mixed 4x100m relay heats, men’s 4x400m relay heats and women’s 4x100m relay final will also feature Indian participation.
In shooting, Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh and Rahi Sarnobat will be involved in the women’s 25m pistol rapid stage and final, while the men’s and women’s trap competitions will continue.

Archery will see the compound individual elimination rounds, while squash will begin its men’s and women’s team competitions.
Outside these events, India will face Afghanistan in the men’s cricket quarter-final and Bangladesh in men’s hockey. The Indian contingent will also feature in boxing quarter-finals, surfing semi-finals and medal contests, sailing, sepaktakraw, tennis, with India taking on Hong Kong in men’s Pool C volleyball.
