Asian Games 2026 Day 8 Results: Squash silvers for Anahat and Abhay, athletics podiums galore for India

India dropped to 12th spot in the medal tally after Day 8

Late drama in the women’s long jump final saw India’s Ancy Sojan fall short of the gold medal, settling for silver instead as India finished day 8 of Asian Games 2026 with seven medals added but no gold. As a result, India dropped to 12th in the medal tally after September 27.

History beckoned the squash players Abhay Singh and Anahat Singh, but their Malaysian opponents were too good on the day. The gold from the singles event in squash continued to evade India, as both players had to settle for silver.

More than the colour of the medal, the composure those two showed speaks volumes about their quality. Anahat saved two match points in the semis, while Abhay beat his Pakistani opponent to secure at least a silver medal.

The day witnessed great performances from Indians in the track and field events. Parul Chaudhary rewrote her personal best to win bronze in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. Tejaswin Shankar topped three of the 10 events to win bronze in the men’s decathlon.

Sarvesh Kushare and Ancy Sojan produced incredible performances to bag silver medals in the men’s high jump and women’s long jump event.

Haritha Bhadra’s accelerated dash in the final 50m allowed her to steal a bronze as she finished 0.01s ahead of Japan’s Ido Abigeirufuka.

Indian archers got off to a brilliant start for the first two days of the competition. Saturday saw the archers securing comfortable spots in the classification round. On Sunday, the archers teamed up in different events, and they registered comfortable wins in all the events.

There are six team events in archery across both men’s and women’s categories, and India have qualified for the semi-finals of all six events. Indians should continue to hit the bullseye and get more gold medals, which have been hard to come by for India.

Power was the order of the day in boxing, with Narendar knocking his opponent out in less than 100 seconds. Medals were also assured for Ankush Panghal and Parveen Hooda, who won their quarter-final bouts, but Sachin Siwach suffered an unfortunate loss.

India’s challenge in badminton came to an end as all four medal contenders lost in the quarter-finals. PV Sindhu and Unnati Hooda, having played two games yesterday, were made to play their quarters early on today. Not enough rest, and their campaign ended on Sunday morning.

The Indian men’s volleyball team were off to a winning start in their group game against Vietnam. Another win for them could secure a place in the quarter-finals. Domination continued on the hockey field as the women’s team beat Singapore 7-0.

It was the same case in the women’s doubles and mixed doubles categories, as India’s badminton journey in the Aichi-Nagoya Games ended with just one bronze medal.

While India won the pre-quarterfinals in fencing, they lost the quarters against Uzbekistan to end India’s journey. Similar results followed in Equestrian, Sepaktakraw, and Kurash, as India failed to trouble the medal winners.
