Asian Games 2026 Day 4 Results: Mirabai Chanu shines with silver; India clinch three more bronze medals
Jay Meena won India’s first-ever medal in soft tennis
India added five more medals to its tally on Day 4, taking the total number of medals won so far at Asian Games 2026 to 12, including a gold. However, that wasn’t enough to help India retain its top-10 spot. India has dropped down to the 13th position in the latest medal tally after September 23.
Mirabai Chanu continued her medal spree, clinching silver in the women’s 49kg category. The three-time CWG gold medalist was competing with North Korea’s Ri Song Gum for the gold.
But with the reigning champion shattered the world record, to win her third consecutive Asian Games title, Chanu had to settle for silver—that was no less history. This is India’s first medal in women’s weightlifting after Karnam Malleshwari in Bangkok 1998.

For the Indian, more than the colour of the medal, she wanted to overcome her past failures in the continental event and clinch the elusive medal to complete her medal tally.
Chanu started with an 83 kg lift in the snatch, followed it up with 85 kg and 87 kg. In the clean and Jerk, she lifted 107 kg and 111kg to seal the silver medal. Although it wasn’t her personal best, the Indian settled for the silver as he didn’t try the third attempt.
Roshibina Devi made it to the finals of the women’s 60 kg in Wushu, making her the first Indian to do so. India had to settle for bronze medals in as many as four events.
Jay Meena in soft tennis, the Indian men’s and women’s skeet teams and the men’s badminton team clinched bronze on Day 4. In soft tennis, Jay lost in the semi-finals against Japan’s Takuya Kurosaka, but ensured India’s first-ever medal in the sport at Asian Games.
The men’s badminton team went down fighting against China in the semi-finals of the men’s team event. Lakshya Sen lost the first match, but the pair of Chirag Shetty/Satwiksairaj Rankireddy won the second match.
Ayush Shetty couldn’t repeat his heroics to concede the lead. MR Arjun and Hariharan fought hard in the fourth game, but the Chinese pair was too good to win the match and secure a place in the finals.
As the losing semi-finalists, the men’s team were awarded the bronze medal. Shotgun team events saw India scratch through to finish in third place.
Anant Jeet Singh and Raiza Dhillon made it to the finals of the individual event in men’s and women’s events. Both unfortunately finished in fourth place and missed out on standing on the podium.
Another fourth-place finish came in the women’s 10m Air Pistol team event. The trio of Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh, and Suruchi Singh fell short of the required numbers to get the medal.
The biggest disappointment came in the women’s 10m air pistol individual event, with only Manu Bhaker making it to the finals and finishing fifth in the event.
Indian Men’s team Sepaktakraw’s journey came to an end despite a win on Wednesday. India needed a 3-0 win against the Philippines to have a chance into the semis, and the team began well, winning the first two.
But they lost the third game. Japan progressed to the next round on the tiebreak, having earlier beaten India 2-1.

India’s fencing challenge for the day finished in the round of 16, with all athletes getting knocked out. Indian swimmers failed to make it to the finals in both the events they took part in on Wednesday.
Ashish Limaye, along with his horse, finished 12th in the cross-country individual event, while the Indian team were eliminated in the team event.
India might not have won many medals on Wednesday, but they made some good progress in the events which are the strongest suit.
The hockey team continued their goal-scoring run, this time annihilating Thailand 20-1. The Indian women’s kabaddi team put up an impressive show against rivals Iran to register a win.
Meanwhile, the men’s team won their group game against Bangladesh, securing a spot in the semis. But the defense of the team has been shaky, and the Sunil Kumar-led side have to pull their socks up before they face bigger teams like Iran.
Ankush sailed through to the quarter-finals in the men’s 80kg in boxing.
Abhay Singh and Veer Chotani won their men’s singles round of 32 squash matches, while Tanvi Sharma eased her way to the round of 16 in the women’s singles. Both table tennis mixed doubles pairs, Harmeet Desai/Yashaswini Ghorpade and Manush Shah/Diya Chitale, won their games to progress into the quarter-finals.
India would be hoping to see these mixed doubles pairs and the squash players beat the odds to aim for the gold. Another sport where India would be keeping their fingers crossed is rowing.
India have made it to the finals in five of the rowing events. It would be a wonderful sight if India could convert a medal or two in a sport where India have won multiple medals in the past.
