Commonwealth Games 2026: India’s medal tally after Day 9, 1st August

It was an absolute medal rush for India on Saturday at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

The ninth day of competition at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026 panned out exactly as Indians would have wished for as the nation’s tally swelled from 23 to 39 medals. These included eight gold, five silver, and three bronze medals.

The Indian boxing contingent had already outperformed themselves, considering that all ten grapplers who had qualified for the semifinals won their respective bouts to enter the gold medal fixtures.

As many as seven of them eventually managed to attain top-of-the-podium finishes, justifying why the country is slowly turning into a global hub for the sport.

In track and field, a one-two finish for the nation was witnessed in the Men’s Shot Put F57 Final, while the silver and bronze medals were pocketed by Indian contenders in the Men’s Triple Jump Final.

Gulveer Singh became the first Indian to clinch multiple medals in athletics at a single edition of the Commonwealth Games, clinching a bronze in the Men’s 5000m race, in addition to his silver in the 10000m run.

While the judokas from the nation on Saturday couldn’t really match the golden standards set by those on the previous day, Unnati Sharma managed to add to the tally with a bronze medal of her own.

Medal events in which Indian athletes contested on 1st August

Several boxers started their respective campaigns right at the commencement of the Games, and the medals won today were a result of the cumulative effort. Out of ten Indians who had won their semifinals, seven clinched gold.

Among these, Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (Women’s 57kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (Women’s 51 kg category) and Arundhati Choudhary (Women’s 70kg) secured unanimous victories, while Priya (Women’s 60kg), Sachin (Men’s 60kg) and Ankush (Men’s 80kg) won by split decision.

Sachin’s win was especially stunning as he brought about a knockdown in the dying seconds of the bout to script a turnaround.

Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain suffered a shock 1-4 defeat in the Women’s 75 kg final to settle for silver. Jadumani Singh (Men’s 55 kg) and Narender (Men’s 90 kg+) lost by unanimous decision.

Meanwhile, track and field events continued to deliver as per expectations. After the Men’s Javelin Throw Final, India witnessed two more double podium finishes within a span of barely fifteen hours.

Soman Rana clinched the gold medal in the Men’s Shot Put F57 final, achieving his season’s best attempt of 13.40 m. He crossed 13m in all five of his legitimate throws, a mark only surpassed by fellow Indian Shubham Juyal, who achieved his season best too to settle for silver at 13.28m.

In the Men’s Triple Jump Final, veteran Praveen Chithravel and youngster Selva Prabhu Thirumaran clinched silver and bronze, respectively. The former attained a distance of 16.58m, with his compatriot falling 6cm short at 16.52m. Jamaican Jordan Scott clinched gold with 16.72m.

Gulveer Singh became the first Indian ever to clinch a medal in the 5000m event at the Commonwealth Games.

In what was a slow and crowded race, he managed to maintain his positioning well throughout and deliver the final kick to clinch bronze with a timing of 13:24.95, just 0.04 seconds ahead of Kenyan Cornelius Kemboi.

Ramesh Shanmugam achieved his season best timing of 3:23.59 but ended seventh in the Men’s 1500m T54 competition.

In the Women’s 10km Race Walk Final, Priyanka produced her season best timing of 45:53.93 to end up fourth, while Ravina was shown three red cards and disqualified from the run.

Dev Kumar Meena appeared to be in good form in the Men’s Pole Vault Final but eventually finished fourth in a strong field, scaling a maximum height of 5.30 m. Kuldeep Kumar finished sixth with 5.10 m.

In the last track and field event for India at the CWG 2026—the Mixed 4x400m Relay Final—the team finished sixth with a timing of 3:20.32.

Unnati Sharma clinched a bronze medal in the Women’s 63 kg category. She started off with a win by IPPON in the R16 and scored a Yuko, followed by a Waza-ari in the quarterfinal.

After losing by IPPON in the semifinal against Aussie Saya Middleton, she won by IPPON against South African Skye Knoester in the bronze medal bout.

Harsh Tokas (Men’s 81 kg) lost his quarterfinal but qualified for the bronze medal bout via repechage, where he went down via IPPON against Aussie Keishin Ochi. Inunganbi Takhellambam (Women’s 70 kg) and Karanjit Singh Maan (Men’s 90 kg) lost their quarterfinal as well as repechage round fixtures.

The results in cycling continued to be disappointing. Rojit Singh Yanglem (22nd, 10.297), Ronaldo Singh (24th, 10.331) and David Beckham (25th, 10.488) failed to qualify from the Men’s Sprint qualifying round. While Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh didn’t finish their respective Men’s 10km Scratch Race Qualifying Heats.

Commonwealth Games 2026: Updated Indian medal tally after 1st August

India Medal Tally Day 9

As expected, India catapulted to number #4 on the medal table as a result of the performances on the penultimate day.

The contingent has a total of 39 medals to its name—thirteen golds, seventeen silvers, and nine bronze medals. Out of these, sixteen have been won in athletics and para-athletics (three golds), ten in boxing (seven golds), eight in weightlifting (one gold), four in judo (two golds), and one in para powerlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026.

What will be interesting to watch is if hosts Scotland, who currently possess the same number of gold medals as India but much fewer silver medals, can pip them and regain their spot on the final day.

What to expect from Indian contingent on 2nd August?

With the Indian Lawn Bowls Men’s Pair duo of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar going down fighting in the tiebreaker against England, they failed to qualify for the semifinal.

What this means is that the only action remaining for India on the final day is track cycling and judo. In cycling, Dinesh Kumar and Harshveer Singh Sekhon will be participating in the Men’s 40km Points Race First Round, with the final scheduled later on Sunday.
