Five Indian players who unexpectedly remained unsold in the IPL 2024 auction
Out of 332 players shortlisted, only 72 were sold in the IPL 2024 auction.
IPL 2024 auction witnessed remarkable milestones and unexpected turns. Held for the first time outside India, the grand event took place in Dubai on December 19th, 2023, adding an international flair to the excitement. The auction’s highlight was the creation of new cricketing millionaires, as some players fetched staggering amounts while others faced the disappointment of remaining unsold.
This marked the blend of triumph and adversity that defines the unpredictable world of cricket auctions. Notably, seasoned players with an experience of 2-3 IPL seasons under their belts found themselves without a bid, underscoring the challenging dynamics of team selections. IPL 2024 auction, with its highs and lows, showcased the unpredictable nature of cricket’s business side. Here is the list of Indian players that remained unsold in IPL 2024.
Five Indian players who unexpectedly remained unsold in the IPL 2024 auction:
5. Hritik Shokeen :
Hrithik Shokeen, Indian off-spinner, faced disappointment in IPL 2024 auction as he remained unsold despite entering with a modest base price of Rs 20 lakh. His exclusion can be attributed to a dip in recent domestic performances and on-field altercations with opponents, tarnishing his image. Shokeen had initially caught attention in IPL 2023 with a promising debut for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings, showcasing his skill as both a batsman and bowler. However, subsequent seasons saw a decline in his impact, with only 23 runs and 3 wickets in 8 games during IPL 2023, coupled with a high economy rate of 9.84.
4. Kamlesh Nagarkoti :
Kamlesh Nagarkoti, the speedster faced a setback in IPL 2024 auction as he went unsold with a base price of 30 lakhs. Known for his blistering pace since his U19 days, Nagarkoti’s promising career was hindered by persistent injuries. First bought by KKR in IPL 2018 auction, Nagarkoti missed the entire season due to injury. Despite him not playing, the franchise retained him until he made his debut in the 2020 season.
He played 10 games and managed to pick only 5 wickets in those matches. He was again retained by the franchise before 2021 season, where he played only one match before being released. In the 2022 edition, he was bought by Delhi Capitals and managed to get selected in the playing XI only once before being released. However, recurring fitness issues likely played a role in his exclusion from IPL 2024.
3. Sarfaraz Khan :
Despite his cricketing journey marked by highs and lows, Sarfaraz Khan faced disappointment in IPL 2024 auction as he remained unsold with a base price of 20 lakhs. Known for his early success with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Sarfaraz featured in an IPL match at the age of 17.
Over the years, he experienced fluctuations in form and fitness, leading to his release from RCB ahead of the 2019 season. Picked up by Punjab Kings, Sarfaraz showed promise in the following season, scoring 180 runs from eight matches. However, he couldn’t perform well in the next two seasons and was released. Despite joining Delhi Capitals in 2022, he couldn’t impress anyone with his 10-match stint in two seasons and failed miserably, which might be one of the main reason why he remained unsold in the IPL 2024 auction.
2. Siddharth Kaul :
Despite his past successes and contributions to various IPL teams, Siddharth Kaul faced an unexpected turn of events in IPL 2024 auction, going unsold with a base price of 50 lakhs. Known for his skiddy pace and crucial wicket taking ability, Kaul initially made his mark in the IPL making his debut for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013.
His standout performance was with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2017, grabbing 16 wickets in 10 games, elevated his status in the league. Subsequent seasons saw him becoming a key player for Sunrisers Hyderabad and later Royal Challengers Bangalore. However, IPL 2024 brought an unforeseen twist as he remained without a bid.
1. Karun Nair :
Karun Nair began his IPL journey with Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2013, later achieving a breakthrough season with Rajasthan Royals in 2014, scoring 330 runs at an impressive strike rate. His subsequent stints with Delhi Daredevils (Now Delhi Capitals), Kings XI Punjab (Now Punjab Kings), Kolkata Knight Riders, and a return to Rajasthan Royals showcased his versatility.
Despite his substantial contributions to various IPL teams over the years, the test triple-centurion, Karun Nair couldn’t find buyers in the IPL 2024 auction with a base price of 50 lakhs, which took place in Dubai.
