Pakistan have already qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as hosts.
ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is all set to take place in Pakistan. It is the ninth edition of this prestigious cricket tournament. Pakistan are also the defending champions, having beaten India in the finals of the 2017 edition. This upcoming tournament will have a total of eight teams competing against each other. This is expected to take place between February and March of 2025.
International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed at the midway of the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India that the teams that finish in the top seven on the points table along with the hosts (Pakistan) will qualify for ICC Champions Trophy 2025. It means the two teams from the current tournament will miss the chance. Teams like West Indies, Ireland and Zimbabwe, who missed a ticket to the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, sadly won’t be part of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
However, a few teams have already qualified for the 2025 edition, which we will check below.
Here are the teams that have qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025
1. Pakistan (Hosts) :
Pakistan have struggled in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. After completion of their eight league stage matches, they are at 5th place with eight points and one game left. Even if Pakistan lose remaining games in the tournament, they will still qualify. It is because they are the hosts of the tournament and will, by default, make it to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. ICC declared Pakistan the host nation during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in the UAE.
2. India:
Team India, as on 7th November 2023, are at No. 1 spot in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 points table with 16 points. They are the only team that haven’t lost a single game so far. With 16 points, India have already qualified for the semi-finals, and being the top-ranked team on the points table, India have virtually qualified for the 2025 edition.
3. South Africa:
Just like India, South Africa have a similar story in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. As on 7th November, 2023, they are second on the points table with 12 points. They will play one more game in the league stage before the semi-finals. Since they’ve already qualified for the semi-finals, they will end up in the top 4 spots, hence, they have qualified for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. The top 8 teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup (including hosts) will qualify for the ICC event in 2025.
4. Australia:
Australia started the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 with two defeats but then bounced back pretty well. They have now won five games on the trot and are almost through the semi-finals. With this, they have also booked a place for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan, being in the top four of the tournament.
5. New Zealand:
New Zealand, as of 7th November, are fourth on the points table with 8 points. They have one more game to play in the league stage. If they win it, they will qualify for the semi-finals of the 2023 World Cup. But if they don’t win, they will still finish in the top five, which means they will qualify for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
6. Afghanistan:
Just like New Zealand, Afghanistan have also won four matches so far and still have two games to play. But with those four wins, they have made it to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. It is a historic achievement, as this is the first time that they will play in the tournament. If they lose both remaining games, they will still finish within the top seven, which is enough to qualify for the ICC event in Pakistan in 2025.
