Three teams have won the ICC T20 World Cup trophy twice.

T20 cricket has changed the whole dimension of the game. It has evolved rapidly over the years and has now become the most popular format of the game globally. The first T20 World Cup became the base of its popularity when it was held in South Africa in 2007.

From 2007 to 2024, nine editions have been played of the ICC T20 World Cup. Six different teams have won the tournament so far and a total of three teams have won it twice.

In this article, we will talk about the teams with the most T20 World Cup titles, from the first edition to the latest.

Australia had to wait 14 years to win their maiden ICC T20 World Cup title. It finally came in 2021 in the UAE, when Aaron Finch led them to glory. They were excellent in run-chases, and put their best foot forward in the semi-final against Pakistan and the final against New Zealand.

5. Sri Lanka – 1 (2014)

After finishing as runners-up in 2009 and 2012 and semi-finalists in 2010, Sri Lanka went on to win their maiden ICC T20 World Cup trophy in 2014. Lasith Malinga led them to success by beating India in the final. Kumar Sangakkara scored an unbeaten 52 off 35 balls in the final, and Sri Lanka became the third Asian team to win the T20 title.

Pakistan have been one of the consistent teams in the shortest format. They have made it to the knockouts six times out of the first eight editions. They finished the inaugural edition as runners-up after losing to India in the finals. But, Pakistan won the second edition of the tournament in 2009 under the captaincy of Younis Khan, which took place in England. After that, they also played the final in 2022, but lost against England.

3. India – 2 (2007 & 2024)

The Indian team created history when they won the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup in 2007. Not many gave India a chance because it was a new team under a new captain. But that was the tournament that changed India’s standing in the cricket world as MS Dhoni led a young Indian team to the title by beating arch-rivals Pakistan in the final.

India won their second T20 World Cup title under the leadership of Rohit Sharma in 2024. It took them 17 years to retain the T20 World Cup title. They defeated South Africa in a cracker of a final by seven runs in the final of the tournament to lift the trophy.
